We are moving to a new home and there is a spot in the spare bedroom that would be perfect for built in snake cages. this spot is roughly 6' wide so I was wanting to build 4 cages and divide them to where I have their normal living area, but next to the living area have a feeding area. My question is if I have 1 swing down door covering both areas, will that be essentially the same as feeding inside the viv? I currently have 3 (soon to be 4 snakes) and we mess with them every night (stress relief before bed). I don't think it will be a problem, but wanted some opinions on it first. Thanks

The thing about developing cage aggression is basically, your hand is reaching into the cage with a mouse, it learns to lunge at your hand, because it thinks you're feeding it. Some people remove the snake, place the food in the enclosure, and replace the snake. Some, like myself move the snake to a different container(critter keeper in my case) and feed them while in the container. It might cause an issue, being that they're not really being moved to a new container, unless you place the food in the container, then move the snake. Just my two cents.

That is a myth actually. Cage aggression is something completely different but i don't know how to explain that.
The "bad" thing about feeding in vivs is that your snake can swallow some substrate by accident which can cause health problems and even death. But if your snake (or the feeding area) is covered with substrate that can't be swallowed (paper towels, newspaper, carpet,...) there isn't a problem.
So yes it would work.
But for feeding it in that area you still have to pick it up, and place it down in the other area. This is not a problem but it would be far more practical to feed in an other container (a tube with a lid secured down with clamps) because of these reasons:
1. Tubs can be stacked inside each other leaving more room than unnecessary big vivs.
2. Sometimes the mice bleed and i think it would be an nightmare to clean that out of the viv. A tub can be rinsed out.
3. You're gonna need a tub anyway to keep the snake in while cleaning.

I did forget about the cleaning though! I spot clean throughout the week, and when it becomes feeding day, moving them into their own container to eat allows me full access to extreme clean the enclosures.

if it wasn't a myth there would be far more snakes that bit you out of those 20. And don't forget, if i go to any small breeder that feeds outside the cage there would still be the possibility that 5 of those 20 snakes lunge at me. That's just their nature.

jmichael - If that is the way you wish to feed your snakes feed them that way. You can feed them in their cage or in a separate tub does not matter to the snake. The only reason i feed in a separate tub is so I can clean the tub and change the water with out disturbing their meal.
