Question about feeding subadult Kings

I recently purchased a Cali King. It is about 3 - 3 1/2 feet long. Good sized. Do I still pick food that is 1 1/2 times bigger than it's widest area? Do Kings of this size still eat every 7 days, or is it cut back? I've been feeding it small rats. Takes it awhile to get it down, but the lump is gone in two days. I just want to make sure I'm not over feeding. Thanks.

I'd say feeding any colubrid a small rat every 7 days is overfeeding. Adults just don't need to eat that much, and I'd assume the snake will become rather overweight with that schedule.

If you want to use rats, I'd go back to every 14 days.

Thanks! I was wondering if that was to much. I would like to keep it on the same schedule as my yearling corn, so is an adult mouse every week ok?

This is what I love about this forum... it's a rarity to post a topic and have it take longer than an hour to get a response.

once a week for any adult is too much. I have my adults on 1 adult moose every 10 - 14 days. However I have a chubby snow who only gets his adult moose every 14 - 20 days. And a female recovering from double clutching every week.

But id stick with a 10 - 14 day routine on either a large adult mouse or a small rat.

Totally disagree, but it depends. If you're talking about a male that you never intend to breed, yeah, once it hits 'adult' size cut it back.

ALL of my adult females get one mouse every 7 days. It's absolutely essential they get that much or more after they lay to get them back to good size before going into brumation.

I have a bunch of females from Rich's adult sale that I'm feeding every 7 days to get some more weight on them before brumation in a few months. They're not small (all are over 300 grams), but they could use some more meat on the bones.

Im cutting my male back because hes so huge. He only grows out the way :( once he has slimed down a little he will go back to every 10 - 14 days. He was overweight before i got him.

And the female is on every 7 days because shes just layed 2 clutches. she will stay on a 7 day routine until she goes into brumation.

Ill feed up "smaller" snakes just to give them a little boost.

I agree with that latter part that I bolded. I have '05 females (and males) that were getting too fat from a weaned mouse every seven days. They were long-past ready for adults, so I obviously couldn't leave them on that schedule when I bumped them. Now they're on 12-14 day schedules, and they're still growing more than adequately. Of course, they're not breeding yet. My females that layed this year were on 7-day schedules out of bru, and after laying. These snakes aren't just generally individuals, but they have individual needs according to their life/breeding cycles.

Heck, I don't have anything even on weaned that is eating more frequently than a 9-day schedule now. The "Munson Plan" was developed by an idiot with just enough experience and data to be dangerous. The new "Munson Plan" is defined as such: there is no plan. :shrugs:

LoL, well I don't have 500 gram yearlings. ;)

I will say, my two okeetee males from Rich are huge. By huge I mean almost 700 grams, and they're on the 14 day plan.

I agree with Joe on this one. Once a week is not necessarily too much for all adults. It depends on the snake...gender metabolism, etc. I typically feed my adult males every 14 days and my adult females every 7-10 days. Now, I do have some adult females that like to pack on the "grams." They get fed on the same schedule as the males.

My cali king female is an exception and she gets fed whenever she wants to eat (only during this time of year). She is one who will fast for months and loses quite a bit of weight then.

I don't intend on breeding. The King is just a pet. As embarassing as this is, I'm not for sure what a moose is. I'm assuming it is an adolesent rat. Something that size would not make a lump in my King. Is that ok? Is an adult mouse every 2 weeks acceptable? I would hate to underfeed and have it get to thin.

Oh dear god yes moose is my way of saying mouse. As a Scott.. we tend to ooo everything. eg moose, hoose, loose, aboot, doon etc

In the U.S., we have many different accents too, but we still spell the words in standard English. A Bostonian might "pack the cah" before entering a supermarket, but he doesn't spell it that way. When his windows get dirty, a Midwesterner may "worsh" them, but he doesn't spell it that way. Where I come from in Vermont, the day after Friday is pronounced "Sad-dee", but I'll be damned if I'll say it or spell it that way...

I think the moose thing is just a little played out...

Wach ya'll gotcher pannies a bunch fer? We shud all start tiepin the way we tawk.

OK, my mom is from New Jersey so I don't actually talk that way, but most people around here do. :)

Oh now now Dean :( Me and my mooses are all offended and stuffs!!11one

Digesting antlers... possible?

In NH, the Moose are bigger than the mice, and happen to have antlers, unless they are cows... You Scots must have some wicked huge mice over there...

In NH Moose are wicked huge, mice are wicked small.

Although now I live in FL, no moose, and I think all the rats eat all the mice here.

In Tampa the rats are bigger than some of the moose in NH.

Sounds like an SAT math problem... ugh
