question about heat

Stevo

New member
On the hot side off my tank the temp is between 93 and 95. I decided to take a reading under the hide and found it at 111-115. Is that temp ok for inside the hide? He seems happy being in there. But thought i would ask anyway.

Thanks

wow Stevo... that's really high. And you say your snake spends time in that hide!?!?!?
What is the cool side of you viv at?
Is there another hide for your snake to move to on the cool side (when he's over-cooked)?

As I have learned by reading a lot of posts on temps in the last few weeks the hot spot shouldn't be more then 90 degrees, and 80-85 is better. Some snakes like it a bit hotter then others (my hot spot in the day is usually around 92 degrees, but Zea naver spends too much time there).

If you are using an under tank heater then you need to get a rheostat to reduce the temp.
If you are using a light as your source of heat then you need to reduce the wattage.
You can also try poking holes in the top of the hide so the heat can escape (it seems to me like it's being trapped in there).

Be careful with high temps and your snake. Read some posts about high and low temps and the effects on your snake. And, if you don't have the Corn Snake Manual by Bill and Kathy Love, get it!

Hope you snake cools-off.............

Ok after reading your post niblips i decided to go and get another thermometer. At the moment i am using the thermomerter on my electrical multi meter and have the feeling that it is not accurate. i shall post the temps in a little while from this new one i have just bought, it just a normal viv themometer not a modern piece off crap like i got now, which i belive is lieing to me cause if the snake was too hot then he would come out too cool down which he is'nt. I also have another thermometer stuck too the glass on the cool side and that is reading between 75 and 80 degrees

Hope you get some better readings with the new one.....
The side mounted temp seems simmilar to mine.
please post your temps when you get them.............

Ok hear are my temps with the new thermometer.

82 on the hot side
At this moment 75 on the cool side which somtimes goes upto 80 depending on the weather.

So it would appear that my multimeter is inaccurate.

those are better.
I have read in several places that the ideal temp for digestion is 90 degrees, so if you could get a spot in your viv up to that temp after your snake eats that would be ideal. That way your snake can decide how warm it wants to be.
We do this for a few days after our snake eats... she's happy.
