Question about vivs being too big...

I've been reading that a change of cage size can be stressful on hatchlings... that they might refuse food if they are switched to a much bigger viv. How often does this happen? We have a new hatchling on the way and I want to make sure he is not stressed. Right now we have a 20 gal. long aquarium set up with heating pad, light, and several hides. Is this too big for a hatchling? If so, how could I section off part of the tank without it being permanent?

Any suggestions? We can't really get a new smaller aquarium easily.

A practise I usually do (whenever possible) is to transfer the original viv furniture (branches, hides, plants) to the new viv. If you can transfer the snakes favorite hide, at least the hide will look and smell like home and the snake can seek refuge in there until it becomes more comfortable with its new home.
 
Two of my three hatchlings went straight into their 40 gallon permanent homes as soon as I got them. They both did fine and ate well for me. The third went into a 10 gallon, and then into a 20 long at about 10 months of age. She had to go through a whole nother adjustment period. Personally, I'd put the hatchling straight into the larger tank.
 
Go with the larger tank.

Nobody runs around outside and tells the wild hatchlings that their habitat is too big for them. Just give him/her plenty of hides and it'll be fine.

I am in Grenada, not too far from you. My son and I were just in Memphis this past weekend. We went to the zoo. Boy was it hot! It's good to know there is someone nearby on the board.

We were going through Grenada not long ago. Good to have another Mississippian on the board. :wavey:
