Question on Flexariums

Baba-Lou

Snakeism Evangelist!
Okay. My b/f's mother got us a Flexarium and tray for it to be horizontal. Now i was wondering. How would I go around heating this If I wished to put our corn into it. I was thinking putting pot feet under the corners to lift it up, and then placing a UTH on some tile or glass to seperate the flexarium and tray from the UTH. Would this be ok? Or could it possibly melt the bottom? I don't think it would if you know what I mean. Plus I do have a rheostat for the UTH, and a Lamp.

I would like to know before I mess everything up.

My dad got me one of those for xmas and I traded it in for an exo-terra tank...I wasn't sure how to heat it, plus it's not as easy to see through to observe the pet. Maybe have a heat lamp clamped on to something else other than the flexarium and pointed into it like what some people do with other vivs? I'm not sure if that would melt anyting as long as it's just heating through the mesh and not near the plastic frame.

Well I can't really "trade" it in for a terrarium. It was bought down south at a different pet store. So I guess I have to wait for more senior members to see what they say. I love the little thing already. The way I picture is. I would be able to see the snake fine.

If its one of those open air cages, the humidity would probably be way to low, and the temps would be hard to control.

Personally I was just considering keeping mine as a "on the go cage", i.e. use it when I'm cleaning her real tank or have it out as a quick storage area if I have her out and suddenly have to leave her for a few minutes, without having to return to her main viv. Plus it was fun to turn it sideways and sit in it myself and let her loose to see what she'd do.

They weren't designed with snakes in mind, so my answer would be no. However some go against better judgement and do use them for snakes regardless of the problems involved with useing such an enclosure.

Not only do you have to worry about heat/humidity, but nose rub issues would be increased since all sides of the enclosure would be mesh rather then simply a top.

It also wouldn't hurt to keep it and use it for outdoor use if you had the desire to take your snake outside for supervised excursions for a few hours in a day.

I have a Reptarium. I am assuming it's the same thing. And I have had no problems with it. My 2 year old snake, Chex, loves it. Its the only way I would have enough money for a large viv for him. Its a "65 gal" one. The only difficulty is that he likes to crawl inbetween the plastic liner and mesh and I have to go in after him if I want to hold him. It said on mine that an undertank heater wont hurt the materials. And basking lights are fine to use but it might discolor the mesh. Just be sure not to let the bulb touch it or it will melt.

Well from what I can tell there the same as those Reptariums you said. I don't see any problems with it. But I want to know before I mess anything up.

humidity control

Stacy, with those long dry winters up in Canada, I would say that even if you could control the heat really well, there is no way you could get a handle on the humidity unless you controlled it at a "room-wide" level. I would hate to see your guy develop shedding problems. Sorry to be a bringer of bad news.

Well lets see. He's got a Moist hide thats prectically permanent because he loves it, and the room he's in is constantly humid. Its right across from my bedroom and I have to sleep with a humidifier. In my building complex its the only warm humid one. And the winters we get here are not as bad as the rest. Sure a little dry. But like I said Their room is fairly humid do to my room. Plus If i set up this Flexarium for him. He'd have both his normal hide and cool side hides and his HUmid one because he likes it in there. So I don't see a problem with humidity and Warmth. As for him rubbing his nose. He only does that when he's in his feeding container and When he sheds. So is there still a problem?

Their has been numerous people telling you "no" the Flexariums/Reptariums were not designed with snakes in mind. Do you wish us all to tell you "go ahead, you'll be perfectly fine" regardless of our knowledge otherwise? Stacy, you can do what you want, it's your pet. However, if you do develop problems, that is on you as you have been warned.
