So my boyfriend and I live like, 3 minutes to the beach in the Panhandle- and I've found a few large seashells, they're very colorful, and some of them actually have Red/Orange/White coloring, like Seamus =)
I want to put them in his tank, but I want to make sure they are clean.
What would be the best way to go about doing that? Bake them in the oven at a certain degree? Or should I soak them in something?
I only worry about soaking because I don't want them to lose their colors.
If anyone has suggestions, feel free to let me know! I've never added anything to his tank that wasn't store bought, so I want to make sure I don't do anything that might hurt him =)

Thank you!

Are these snail type shells or clam like shells? If the snail like I can see that being a problem, there is always a chance your snake would squeeze in so tightly you would not be able to get it out if wanted or needed.

I would think that instructions for sterilizing wood or stone would work for shells. Sorry I don't know the temperatures or times off hand. A search of this site should probably find all the info you need.

Oh these are totally open shells.... Like the little mermaid's bra?? They look like that lol I was hoping the instructions for wood and such would be the same, but I didn't see anything for seashells. Thank you!

I have hermit crabs and when new shells are being introduced to the tank, it's advised to clean them. All that's recommended for crabs is to boil them in water for 10 minutes and then let cool and dry. I assume that would would with snakes, too! I mean, the crabs are wearing them! lol

I would suggest boiling them for 20 minutes in water with some vinegar (anything else I would use bleach on, but you risk losing the color) and let them dry in the sun. Inspect them closely for little critters, and maybe use a soft toothbrush (I will loan you my husbands ;) ) to get between the crevices.

I have lots of seashells in my vivs, they are really pretty and easy to clean.
