I wouldn't use actual newspaper or anything else that has ink on it. But there is a woop pulp paper product out there called CareFresh. Works very well EXCEPT it is gray colored.

Yeah, you might want to try Care Fresh. I would never use shredded paper as the snake could burrow through it and poop all over the place. I would say that a normal sheet of paper would be better IMHO.:).

I've seen newspaper used all the time - I personally use aspen shavings, but I only have 12 snakes - A couple of my friends that are breeders and have 200 or 300 animals - newspaper is a cheap easy to clean alternative - anyone else have opinions on newspaper? :p

paper is ok if u have loads of snakes its cheap and easy!! but i personally love the apperance that aspen or repti bark give to the overall effect of a tank! much nicer!:D

i was told that the reason for not using newspaper was that it rubs off on the snake and dulls its color a lot, and it looks like newspaper.

well

I have seen it "rub" off a tiny bit once. But other than that it is a perfect substrate. Many many people use it to house large collections sucsessfully each year.

And nothing can "make" a snakes colors look dull. Certainly not newspaper. I have seen nothing like that ever happen and I am housing a variety of snakes on a newspaper/aspen mix right now. I have seen no ill health effects either.

Frankly I am finding Aspen to be messy, ugly, and it doesn't work at all when my snake decides to go under it and poop. It just sticks to the glass tanks making them harder to clean. I am discontinuing my use of this when the bag is empty. But mind you I don't have 1 snake, I have 9 and about 30 other reptiles to take care of. I just don't have time to spot clean the aspen and search for crap. But a person with one snake is really open to use whatever substrate they want since they can take all the time in the world to clean cages! :)

The trick is to check with the newspaper and make sure they use soy based ink. Also colored pages are unsafe.
You don't have the reassurance with junk mail that they use soy ink.

You can also get end rolls from the newspaper company that are unprinted and use them.
