Questions From Newbie

Hi everyone,
I just acquired my first corn snake and had a few questions for you, hope you all can help. My snake is a normal corn about 16 inches long.

1. I like the coloration on my snake now, and i've heard somewhere that the color gets darker as they get older. Is this always the case? If this is the case how much darker and when does it stop get darker?

2. Is there anyway to find out how long an individual snake will get? I know size can vary from 3-6 feet... does it depend strictly on genetics? Does how much you feed it depend how long it gets, or simply how fast or fat it grows?

3. I've been feeding frozen/thawed pinkies every 5-6 days. Should i feed more or less often?

4. How common is it that small corn snakes die? (I don't intend on mine dying, i'm just curious)

5. What is the best disinfectant to use when cleaning up the viv the snake lives in? (or what would you suggest)

All your advice will be appreciated and greatly help me and my corn out.

Thanks!

I'll try to help

Let's take these questions in order:

1. This is a hard question to answer since the snakes genetics are not known. I would hazard a guess and say that your corns color really won't change that much..IMO..

2. The size of the snake usally depends on the gentics but most corns are in the 3.5-4.5 ft range.. Again this is probably an average..IMO..If you feed your corn alot they may grow faster but then you may end up with an obese snake.. I'd say just feed your corn once a week.... Don't forget to feed food of appropriate size..IMO..

3. That's a sounds like a good feeding schedule....IMO..

4. Most baby corns die due lack of proper care and feeding..Pet stores not telling the new owners proper care instructions etc..etc..If you take good care of your baby corn he/she may live for up to 30 yrs...IMO..

5. Well this is up to you, but I use a bleach/water solution. I use 1/2 capfull of bleach to 1 gallon water.. Then I rinse everything off real good under cold water.. Dry with a clean towel and I'm done...IMO..

Hope this helps you and your new corn friend out.. I am others on this site will be happy to give you some more idea's..

BTW, welcome to the forum..

I totally agree with everything drizzt has said except a little about the color of your normal corn. In my experience, normal hatchlings seem darker than what they end up to be as adults. Your normal corn, at about 16 inches, sounds like a 2002 hatchling. It has already probably lightened up a bit since hatching, but it's colors may yet become even more bright. Yes, some normals get darker a few years down the road, but I've not seen any of my own yet get any noticably darker. I've attached a pic of my oldest normal, a 1995 hatchling, and I wouldn't consider her dark at all.
