Quick heating question

I setup my zoomed snake kit today with a UTH on the right side. 2in of aspen bedding, a hide hut, plastic plant and blue day light that came with the kit. The warm temp is hovering around 80 but when i shut off the light for the evening the temp plummeted to 65!!! All my candy cane corn has done since i brought him home is burrow and hide. Hasn't come out once! Do i leave the light on overnight or is there something better??

New and insecure...
Thanks

Hi, I saw you posted in the FAQ section and directed you down to the subjects, I am glad to see your post here. I will reiterate, here is a sheet I made for a newbie, there is so much reading and learning to be done and hopefully this will help. Start out by getting rid of the lamp and setting your thermostat to 87° and leave it there 24/7. They don't need a day/night difference, just a gradient temperature which will be about 85° on the warm end and about 75° on the cool end. The snake will choose where he likes it best. care sheet info

I will also add to put several hides in the viv, especially one at each end and since he is a baby mine like smooshed toilet paper rolls half hidden in the aspen. Lots of ground covering plastic or silk plants are favorites of the smaller ones, they feel more secure under the leaves.

They tend to sleep/hide during the day, they are nocturnal (again, another reason the lamp isn't necessary) so you may not see him often during the day. Leave him be for a week or so before taking him out and/or feeding him. Let him get used to his viv and new surroundings.

Ok i got it open on my computer...

I am still a little confused. I understand that overhead lights are bad. Mine has been turned off. What i dont get is that without the overhead lamp and the UTH on constantly the temp is only 65-70. Thats not hot enough so what do i do?

Where are you measuring the temp? You need a probed thermometer on the glass above the uth.

Room is kept about 65-68 and im using the thermometer that came with the zoomed kit. Its velcroed to the glass behind the the wood hide

It is bad that they put such a lousy thermometer in the kit. They make a probe type thermometer. It should come in it instead.

Ok so i went to every pet shop in the city today (literally!) looking for a rheostat. No luck... Is this what I want? Im trying to order one online...

That will work. You will be happier with a thermostat though. You dont have to make adjustments for summer/winter with a thermostat. You will need to adjust the reostat to account for ambient temperature variations.

It self monitors the temp. With the reostat, you monitor it. The reostat is more consistent once set, but has to be reset with ambient temperature changes. The thermostat has its own probe that takes its own temperature updates.
