Quick Question

i was wondering what the affects of certain chemicals or "unnatural" components of water is to a corn.. i am using a jug of spring water from ontario here that i bought, and today while i was handling my snake for the first time since i got him (finally :) ), i took him down to the water cause i just filled it with fresh water right before i picked him up and he drank a ton of it ( it was warm today and the water was cool compared to the stuff that was in there before i changed it).. so shoudl i worry about what he's drinking in in his water? ive used aquaplus stuff to get rid of any chlorine, but what about other things?

BTW, snakes look super funny when they are drinking water, he looked like he was grinning real big over and over again.. t'was amusing to watch for the first time

I shouldn't image it does them any good ... but doubt it does them much harm either.

I've read a lot of guidelines and stuff in the past few months (been doing little else) and can't reemember seeing tyhat anywhere - and I would remember.

I'd stick with tap water!

BTW Bottled water isn't as "pure" as people think

buuuut..

i live in an apartment building, so the water here smells like its from a pool from the chlorine in it, so im sure there are lots of other strong chemicals in our water here, so bottled water is really the only way i can go.. is there anything i can do to make sure its as ok as i can get it.. boiling or something?? i can use my Brita filter on it if that would make it better... i just dont want him growing a third eye or something from our apartment water... the little guy sure does drink a lot

I'm not an expert but ...

if your water is that bad I'd use bottled then ... boiling it may do good but definately wont do any harm

You can buy products, specially designed for reptiles, that you put in the water to get rid of nasty chemicals and things. Can you get ReptiSafe where you are?

i know of one store within a 2 hour drive of here that sells it i think, but its 20 dollars for a small bottle of it.. im assuming they have raised the price since no one else carries it... ive looked at other stuff too, but most of it just removes chlorine.. the place i bought him at was just using aquaplus in the water, so i am using that for now, but i wasnt sure if other things found in water was harmful.. i would never consider using my tap water, so its mainly worrying about the stuff thats in bottled water

umm

i already stated that i have a filter.. you should have read my other posts, i was asking if it was necessary to use it on the bottled water or not

i also have a filter

I also have a britta water filter and i've been using it for about 3 months now and so far no 3rd eyes :D
But if your really that unsure you could just boil water and any extra you have left over just put it in a bottle for next time

I also have Koi fish.

The water here in the Bay Area is considered absolutely safe for human consumption, but not for fish. It isn't the chlorine so much as the chloramines that the Utilities "Big Boys" have put in it. Now, all water added to fish ponds must be treated before, or while it is being used.

Now as far as snakes go: most people I know here use tap water and they don't do anything special to the water and their reptiles do very well. However, I use distilled, bottled water even for myself. In my opinion, snakes (and birds) aren't that much higher up the evolutionary latter from fish. If I don't add treatment chemicals to my fish water, they will all die from drinking in and breathing chloramines. Do I want to risk having all my snakes die?

However, I don't trust the treatment chemicals that I add to my fish pond either. Once used, fish can no longer be used for human consumption. That's right, the fish are now poisonous--not that I would eat my own koi, but I have eaten carp on occasion. I don't think I would eat my snakes either, although I have eaten rattlesnake and copperhead, but the fact that the chemicals change my fish means that there is a possibility (at least in my mind) that the chemical will have some ill effect to my snakes.

The best water is distilled. If you cannot buy it, then you can distill your own simply enough.

The point is: don't stress out too much on what to do with your snakes. Have fun. Learn. Do what you think is best for them.

Chloramines and Chlorine evaporate

This is what I do...

I use a Brita Water filter and fill up a pitcher with water (not the brita pitcher, I filter the water into the brita pitcher then pour it into a clean pitcher). That gets rid of a tonne of the bad stuff. Then in order to make sure that the water is free or chloramines and chlorine I let it sit out for 48 hours. This sitting time will get rid of all the Chloramines and Chlorine.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks

thanks a lot.. i'll probably just brita the bottled water (bottled water is super cheap so i might as well use it), and i have a second brita so i can just keep it seperate from the fridge one.... im just super paranoid after my chameleon died and i spent hundreds on all these vitamins and supplements and food and water treatments and meds for him and nothing ever worked, so im a bit more cautious about everything now

haha

I use tap.

For one, bottled water has many times been proven to be in some cases worse than tap. Why? Because no bottled water company has as strict regulations as your City Water does. And in some cases, your tap is safer to drink than any type of bottled because of this.

For two, I have had a discussion on this on another forum. Some people said they had heard that giving untreated tap water made it uneasy for nasties to live in the water bowl and cage. And by the time your snake comes by to take a drink out of the water most of the "bad stuff" in the water is gone away anyway. Do I believe this? Not yet, because not enough proof and writing on this. But it makes some sense.

I just use tap.!

but should i not be concerned about the chlorine?? i live right by the GM factory so our water is terrible, i wont even drink it unless its been filtered, it smells like pool water..

It's kinda like BMM said, By the time that your corn goes to drink the water, the crap has left it. If you're using brita, that should be fine too. Honestly though, Even when I go to give my corns a bath, they end up drinking the water and it's not like I use filtered water to make them poo in. So I don't know how much of a difference makes. I try to give them the best care I can, and I make sure that their drinking water is quite clean when they get it.

PS - Chameleons are super picky animals to start off with, there's no comparison, corns are very hardy creatures! With that said, I do baby my babies though!
