Rack Gap Question

I'm putting together my home made rack and test fitting the shelves. How much gap is too much gap between the top of the sterilite and the bottom of the shelf above? Right now, I'm looking at about 1/8 inch gap. Should I close that up some more or will that do? There is no rubbing as it slides in.

Thanks!

1/8" is a little bigger then I would be comfortable with, but also depends on size of snake that will be in the rack system. Many people I know will put a magazine under the tub, just to tighten the fit. susang

Yeah, yeah... don't be a lazy old fart, Bruce.

Moved the brackets up an 1/8, and predictably...too tight. Brought them back down a 1/16th, and the fit is nice.

Now to put on 4 more sets, and I'm done! Well, gotta put a cross brace on top for more stability.

A piece of indoor/outdoor carpet will solve the problem. It takes up between 1/8" to 1/4", but the loops will compress, making for a snug fit. I had to use it when I bought replacement tubs for my rack. The Sterilite tubs are just a wee bit shorter than the original Rubbermaids, and the carpet worked perfectly.

probably no need for that now... I penny barely squeezes into the gap.

Question about the Flexwatt... the sterilite has 1/4 'feet' (or so)... with the flexwatt taped to the shelf, will it put out enough heat to warm the sterilite to the right temp without harming the shelf itself, or should I tape the flexwatt to the bottom of the bins themselves? Of course, that'll require more engineering, but I have a 1.5 hour commute each way which offers plenty of time to think of stupid stuff.

You could put thin tiles or glass on top of the flexwatt to transmit the heat to the bottoms of the bins.
