Raising them in the Gerage

Can I raise mice in the gerage? I live with 2 other people and they dont mind the snakes(but when it is feeding time) as much as they mind the idea of haveing mice in the house. Go figure, ha... Anyways I was wandering if there was a way I can raise them in the Gerage? Can I put them in a 10 gal tank with a small heat mat underneath and maby a small heat lamp over the top? I live in southern California and at this time of day it is about 98*F outside. And last night around 23:00 it was about 70*F But in winter it gets a little colder. Anyone have any tips or ideas for me? Or in the long run... Is it just better to buy them?

I wouldn't allow your rodents to get above 85 degrees. My place hit almost 90 yesterday unexpectedly and my rats and mice were not happy. I couldn't install the air conditioner fast enough. Unless you have a way to keep them cool, I don't think the garage is such a good idea this time of year.

You can raise mice or rats in your garage in the summer time. I do it in San Antonio. But, remember that you can keep more in a 10 gallon in the winter than in the summer. I have a rack system that I raise mice in and have to lower the number in each cage do to the heat. And, they need alot more water. Also the number of babies will drop alot, like from 12 in a litter to 5-6 in a litter. I drop my numbers from 4-1 to 2-1 in each cage. I also have a window in my garage that i have a fan in to move air in the garage for the mice.

So a 10 gallon tank with a boy and girl mouse would be ok? Today it was only 98*F in Temecula Ca. How about the winter? Heat Pad and lamp work during nitetime temps? I just want to make sure that they live and no mouse gets me snakes sick.

I agree with Quigs.... if it's 98* outside and you don't have an air conditioned garage, your mice won't make it... end of story.

If I don't turn the AC on by late April when the temps start to get in the mid to high 80's then I start to lose my mice to heat exhaustion. Once it hits 90's I think that the mice start to become sterile due to the heat.

It could be that your garage is 13 degrees cooler than the ambient temperatures, if so, it's ideal.

What I might do, if I were you, is plan on a fall/winter collection of mice.... start your collection once daytime temps are peaking at 85*.... breed them over the winter, and freeze them off when the temps are back up to 85*.... then you won't have to worry about the expense of buying them. You'll just have to start all over with the breeding of the mice every fall, but it might be worth it.

True story: I left my gerbils home for 3 days over the weekend while I was on vacation. Mother nature had a break down and it got up to 90* in March and no more gerbils.

LOL, I'll swap houses with you, and then you wont have any problems! We're lucky to get a day or 2 of 28*C+ here in the UK. *sigh* bloody weather

I hear ya Dan -hehehe, we don't have it much better in Sweden. Our summers are a balmy 23-27 in the day for about 2 months of the year but the winters are looooong and it often doesn't get above 2 for weeks on end....There are a couple of things I miss about Melbourne...*sigh*
