im sorry for asking this question on a corn snake website!!! But i have two rat snakes (black and yellow :shrugs: ) male and female theyve lived together all their lives so theres no problem there. their both fairly big female about 4-4.5ft male about 5ft.
Just wondering if this is correct:
WARM SIDE 82-85F.
COOL SIDE 70-75F.
HIDE ON EACH SIDE.
ASPEN SUBSTRATE
FEED AT SEPERATE ENDS OFF THE TANK TO AVOID FIGHTS.
LEAVE FOR 3 DAYS TO GET USED TO NEW SURROUNDINGS.
I done research on the net BEFORE buying them just wanted to make sure it was correct.

once again sorry.

YOu should also leave them for two days after they eat. I really think you should use the search function and read some threads about cohabbittaion.

the kid nailed pretty much everything. i wouldnt advise feeding on aspen either. more than likely, you wouldnt have a problem, but why risk it.

So far as keeping the two together, the only problems i could see would be the size of the enclosure. those are both good sized snakes, but they still have the potential for some growing especially the black rat. unless you want some little intergrades scampering around, then i wouldnt suggest keeping a male and female together. yellows and blacks are essentially the same snake with a different look, so breeding is can and often does happen between the two. Judging from their size, and if you feed them seperately, i highly doubt you have to worry about any cannibalism. That's about all that i can think of at this time to add.

i appologize. i didnt see where they have lived together for some time now. If there hasn't been any problems so far, then there shouldn't be any for you.

As cornsnakekid said ... leave them for two days after they eat....... and read some threads about cohabitation.
Also I would feed in a separate container.

55gal should be fine. personally i'm not a fan of keeping more than one snake together, but it sounds like they should be fine as long as you supply plenty of hides (minimum 2 per temperature zone). from my experience, blacks and yellows tend to be easier to keep together than corns anyway.

You were on the right track to begin with. It doesn't matter how long they've been together; they'd be better off apart.

The whole "There's never been a problem, so there won't be a problem" mentality doesn't make sense to me. If you flip a coin four times, and you get 'heads' each time, does that mean there's no chance of getting 'tails' on the next flip?

of course they'd be better off apart, but that doesnt mean that they'll kill each other if they are together. it's a risk, sure, but that's up to him to take. that's why i said that their shouldn't be a problem rather than telling him that there will not be a problem. dont get me wrong, i'd rather see them in two 20L's rather one 55, but sometimes you have to work with what's available. if it was me i'd look into two 20's, but that's something he's gonna have to decide whether he wants to risk.

sorry for the misunderstanding.

didnt mean to start an argument. after whats been said i may invest in two seperate tanks. But for now they seem happy together.
so thanks everyones

nah, it's cool. no argument started. Munson was right, they would be a lot better off if you were to keep them seperate. I was trying to say that there shouldn't be a problem if you had to keep them together, but there's always a risk, but the words were getting lost somewhere b/t my brain and finger tips. it's been one of those days.

ok sweet. i was thinking i started an arguement. i hope i can ask here again if i get any problems!! this website helped me out a lot with my corn. good job aswell, the place i get my snakes from is about as much good as a chocolate teapot. thanks everyone

:crazy02: That has got to be the funniest analogy I've heard in a long time! Nice one!
