Really low humidity

maddy4moos

Salsa's parent :D
Since i got my first corn snake (salsa) i have been having a few problems with humidity and keeping it from the lowest humidity level ever! it always seems to be on 'desert'.

I have bought a spray bottle to litterally spray water into his tank, sometimes we do this ones a day, sometimes i have to do it 3 times a day.

Is there any simpler, or better ways for me to keep the humidity a bit higher?lately he seemed to struggle a bit with his sheddings.

I would really apprerciate any help anyone can offer me.
Thanks! :)

I think would be better to have a humdromater that measures the actual humidy, not "desert", "rainforest"(or whatever). That way you will have an actual reading to go by. The poor sheds may not be from the humidity at all. Could be from something else all together.........JMO

it does tell me the attual humidity, but he's supposed to be at about 50 right???

but sometimes it litterally goes to 0!

what do you mean it might not be the humidity... what else could it be?

I'm no expert, but I don't think any air has zero humidity....unless in the antartic, or the artic, and I'm willing to bet they even register "some" humidty. How old is your hydrometer? I think I'd invest in a new hydrometer that actually registers the "temps" and not a range as it sounds like yours does?

I also have to work at keeping the humidity up because of the dry heat in my house.

I keep a fairly large water bowl in the tank, use aspen bedding and mist daily, and keep most of the screen top covered with news paper to hold in the moisture. That will usually keep me around 40% RH. When I want to incerase humidity as in shedding I run a cool mist room humidifier in the room and that will get me between 50 and 60% RH.

Great idea Jack......never thought of that. Gonna have to try that in the future. As we all know here in the "Union" states it can get pretty dry in the winter

I also agree that it may be time for a new hygrometer. Unless you live actually in the desert, most corns will do fine with ambient humidity. If he is struggling with sheds, try providing him with a humid hide at shed time.

lol, i'am having the totally opersit problem, mine is just a little too high, if yours is around 45-70 it should be alright, mines at 70 atm i would be more relaxed if it was at around 50 tho, but what can you do? i'am just waiting for my snake to shed then his humid hide can be removed and hopfully that will lower the humid lvl, anyways goodluck mate, :)

yeah, i've been putting tin foil on the top of his tank. My hydrometre is new! its only 4 months old.... or is that old for one of these?

I have a massive bowl of water in his tank

how do i make a humidity hide? mostly for when he's shedding?

I believe theres more reasons for humid hides then shedding, one may be to raise your tanks humidity level!

Well just for you:

First off, get a tub, then cut a hole from the side big enough for the snake to get in and out "not to big" and then use a lighter to melt the edges, it will dry within a few seconds then you should run it under cold water, there you have a tub with a smooth entrance, now get lots of tissue, "or moist" and full all the corners and the bottom of the tub, here is a picture of mine,

Also make sure it has a lid!

I forgot to add, wet the tissues and then rinse them out so there damp! it lasts about 2 days before you have to re-place the tissue, i haven't yet and its been 4 days there still wet but Damien will not come out, hes one determind snake :p

I made one and he loves it!!!!!!!!!!!

its been a while since he comes out of it. i haven't replaced the tissue in ages... he seems to have moved and ripped the tissue inside it so that he can have an extra hidey hole in it. still trying to get pictures...

is this normal??? (for him to rip and create extra hidey holes in his humid hide)

thanks! :D:):D

There's no way the humidity in Leeds can be 0 or near 0 :eek1:

I'm over the hills in Lancashire and it's 50+ around here. Leeds air isn't as damp as that I know but I'd still be expecting an average of 40+

Have you tried getting a reading in the open air to check it works? Probably time for a new bit of kit like it's been said or check the batteries

yeah its one of those stick on ones.

ok i'll do that, his tank seems to be in the 'middle' now anyway so all is good, i just spray his tank everyday with water.

Another thing you can use in a humid hide is damp Spaghnum Moss. You can get it from most reptile shops and its more "natural" than tissues are (more expensive though).

If you do get some, wash it through, then wring it out and put in in the tub. When your snake isn't shedding you can put dry moss in there for him... My snake loves his mossy hide! :)

kool! i'll have to try that one, i'm always experimenting with new things in his tank... probably won't do it every 2 weeks (everytime i clean out his tank) but maybe do it like, paper 2 weeks, moss 2 weeks, paper 2 weeks, moss 2 weeks etc etc etc
