Really ugly poop & regurge...

Found a really ugly looking poop - almost looked like melted candlewax. Kind of a yellowish with some dark brown and white, certainly not like his normal poops. It came after a regurge. I'm on protocol and confident he'll make a good recovery, just worried about him and could use some reassurance. He's been growing steadily, but I'm just confused as to why he regurged to begin with? According to the munson plan I'm feeding him either less or the very lowest I should be (he was 39.8g when I fed him and I gave him a 7g fuzzy). So size shouldn't be an issue. His temps are all regulated with a thermostat, humidity controlled, and he's never had a single health issue in the past. I'm just trying to not blame myself, but I feel like I may have done something wrong.

The only thing I can imagine is I get a little lax with him, like I forget he IS a baby and I sometimes leave my phone next to his cage which may have vibrated/made noises and bothered him enough to regurge?

anyway, he's been hiding in his humid hide but no signs of shedding. He's pretty alert when I check on him but no sign of him leaving at night.

My questions are... is that poop bad news? And what could I have done wrong? Do they just sometimes regurge for reasons out of my control?

The poop sounds normal. How long did you wait before feeding, after the regurge, and did you feed a mouse half the size of what he regurged?

If their system is relatively empty, they can have mucous-y, lighter poops.

It's pretty difficult to scare a snake into regurging, unless it happens immediately after feeding. Like I have a baby who, after feeding, would strike repeatedly at the front of his bin, until he regurged. He then was always covered, after that, and has grown a lot more tolerant, too.

The most likely cause is going to be prey too large, snake in blue or about to be blue or just after blue, temps too cold, handled while digesting.

It sounds normal? There were no urates and it just looked/smelled pretty foul, not the usual snake poop foul. I could be a little paranoid though? But if it's an "empty gullet" poop then that makes sense.

On the 20th he ate a 6.4 gram fuzzy no problem, I went out of town and got back the 30th and fed him a 7 gram fuzzy which he regurged on Tuesday the 4th. So I'm waiting until next Wednesday until I bother feeding again and I'm probably going to go with a single slit pinkie.

I don't handle within 4 days of feeding(infact I usually wait for a poop), and I don't see any signs of blue but it's an absolute possibility - he's grown like 7grams in the past month since his last shed. And cold could also be a possibility, with the recent cold snaps in Florida recently, but it never got any colder than 68 ambient in our home(and we kick on the heater for them when it does) (and he has his UTH so that shouldn't be a problem).

Hmmm... interesting that it took 5 days to regurge. Are you *sure* your temps are all where they should be? What is the UTH probe reading (and not the thermostat probe, but a different digital thermometer, if you've got one)? I find that mine read very differently. For example, I've got PVC cages and I have the thermostat probes on the outside under the UTH, and it is set at 97F because it only reaches 83-84F inside the vive, after getting through all that plastic.

I was also a little worried about that. I have the thermostat set up with a second thermometer reading at the glass on the inside, solid 87. But what might be happening... he might have outgrown his warm hide! I forget he's grown soo much since he started on fuzzies, he's so much bigger and the little stump on his warm side might just be too small? I'm going to put his bigger tissuebox over there. But I think I also might slit all his meals from now on.. Just in case.

Thanks for the help, both of you! :) I hope that's what it is, and I'm going to chop up some boxes tonight and make some extra hides & borrow some vines from my crestie for some extra cover. Might as well feel secure when you've got a belly ache.. :p

When I checked on his his head looked a little desaturated, but his neck and saddles looked bright as ever so he doesn't look very sheddy, but it could be early. Who knows...

It's hard to see from the picture. They certainly aren't jet black, probably off black. He did leave his small hide and investigate how I moved around his viv and snuggled up in the warm side so that's a good sign I think. I put his favorite tube right on the uth. uploadfromtaptalk1391811401134.jpg

That's what I'm thinking. If I have my dates right his last shed should have been mid December, maybe the 15th or 16th. I'll keep a close eye on him and see what happens.

Also, he's finally out and exploring like he usually does when he's hungry. Burrowing and relaxing in his new arrangement. I think that could have had something to do with it.

Update: no blue yet, but he is grey all over, totally dull and rather feisty. Probably going to be blue in a few days. Should I bother offering a slit pinkie tomorrow? There no cloudy eyes, still clear, just dusty and dull.

Sometimes corns will regurge if they eat while in shed. Since he has already had one regurge, you definitely want to avoid a second one. It will be much better for him to miss another feeding than to have another regurge, so I recommend you should wait to be safe.

Hell hath no fury like my snake in shed... When I open the cage he is ready to take me out... lol

I decided not to bother, and I think he probably has grown too much since his last shed and this one will probably be a doozy! After he sheds, (much to his dismay) I'll just offer him a slit pinkie. Poor thing is going to smush his face against the glass and cry for more. ;)

Thanks kc :)

Rigby shed (a thick one!) and grew quite a lot! I weighed him to monitor he only went down .2 grams, so I don't think it was too hard on him. And I fed him a slit pinkie, which he took quickly and hasn't regurged so I think it's safe to say he's doing ok for now. :)
