Red bulb/white bulb, $12.99/$0.50...

He's REALLY jumpy today... I wonder if that's because of the light. I never did get an answer though, regarding turning it off at night.

Why is it so important that a white light must be turned off, but a red light can stay on 24/7? Is this like a night/day thing (because the red light never changes...)?

I believe... it has to do with the lighting spectrum different species can see, different frequencies within the spectrum- it is my understanding that the snakes are unable to "see" the red or blue light. The white/pink light can be seen, and as such would disrupt their day/ night cycle. :shrugs: I just thought especially since they didn't have eye lids, they wouldn't care for having a bright light shinning on them all the time :) Just my 2 cents :)

Yes WhiteLips...You are correct. The Red Light put out infrared heat. The softness of the red light is different than that of a pink/white light.

This goes along the same lines as wearing Bright Orange while hunting. almost all animals are color blind or can only see in black and white. Thus the Bright orange will alert other hunters to your presence, but not the animals. I can't be sure if snakes are color blind or only see in Black and White, but from what I have red, if you use a light at night, it either has to be black/blue or red to keep the correct photo periods for the snakes. Using the red light in the day time is ok because in the day you have indirect sunlight coming in from windows, and white light coming from any light that is on in the same room.

Let me get this straight. The red light produces heat, but it basically just darkness to the snake so any light that the snake recognises as "daylight", is from any white lights coming from outside the tank. IE a window or lamp in the room.

This makes sense, why he was extra jumpy today (while under the pink light). Well this changes so much (I dislike the red light)...

The red light is back on (UTH off) and he's no longer jumpy... guess he doesn't like the brightness.

But this brings me to another question.

What's the difference between a $12.99 red heating bulb from the pet store, and a regular red light bulb? Besides the $10 difference in price...

a regular red light bulb puts off infared heat just the same as the petstore one. I've never seen one for $3 tho. When you purchase the red bulb, make sure your wattage is the same or you'll be too cool or too warm. The large difference could have something to do with the fact that it's bought from a petstore and labeled "Reptile Light" Also, i found those "blacklight/blue moonlight" lamps work really well and dont affect the night/day cycle but still allows for night viewing.

Wow, after reading this thread, i'm so glad i switched over to a racksystem.

Oh no, you did NOT just say "racksystem". *sigh* What is this "racksystem" you speak of? lol

I've seen some red bulbs here for $1.50. If there is no difference between those and the $13 pet store ones though... SOLD. You know? lol Come to think of it, I have one in storage. When I was younger my mom used to call it my "hooker light".

lol! Hooker light! My husband said almost the the same thing when he saw the red bulbs in the snake cages. He said "thank god we don't have neighbor's or they might think this was a red light district house."

I was wondering the same thing about the red bulbs at walmart vs the Reptile Red Night light bulb that costs 6.50.

I went looking for dimmer's and the cheapest I found was 30.00 from big Apple. I might go ahead and get it. You can plug up to 3 things in it.

I had a question about Dome lights. The silver round ones. Can you sit them right on your screen top? Or do they have to be lifted some how? Right now I have the dual lights but I don't like the way they look on the cages. And can the dome lights take the Reptile bulbs or do you have to use the heat emulator or halogen light?

Thanks!

Jean

racksystem = solution to a bunch of little problems along with relief of one big headache.

*sigh* a lot of questions tonight...Lets hope that I can stay awake long enough

The red lights you buy at the local grocery store are the same as the ones you buy from a pet store. The ones at a Pet Store are more expensive because they are sold as specialty items.

Again, read an earlier post I made on here about black/blue lights. I used these and had a negative reaction from 2 of my snakes to them.

Rack System is here: Rack System Thread
The rack System allows you to house multiple Reptiles in a small amount of space. All Large breeders use these. If you check out South Mountain Reptiles You can find a picture of Don Solderberg's Rack System on the site...Direct Link. When you start working with Rack Systems a lot of people tend to say that you start to get very distant with the snakes because you can't see them every day like you can in an Aquarium/Vivarium. However, if you spend the same amount of time with the snakes after you put them in the rack system, then you won't be distant. I guess that it is all just left up to personal interpretation.

Yes, the Dome Lights can be set on top of the Screen. However, you need to watch the temps right under the light, and make sure that the snake can't get directly under it. This can cause burning and possibly fatal consequences. A lot of the dome lights come with clip like arms that you can clip onto something to raise the light just above the top of the screen to prevent the snake from getting too close. You can use anything to clip these on to, I just made a small stand out of 3 pieces of scrap wood. I will post pictures tomorrow when I have access to a faster internet.

:-offtopic Spirit, I have all the pictures that I promised you. I will post them tomorrow too.

Hope that all this helps out.

Thanks Paul!! Yes that helped out a lot. I now know where I'm getting my next bulbs when I need them. And I'm still thinking about the dome light, but you answered my question.

Thanks Again!
Jean

glad that I helped and answered your questions. And, don't take my sarcastic tone too bad.
