red bulb

hi I picked up a red bulb for night time and it should have been a 60watt but by mistake I picked up a 40 watt bulb . will this give enough heat to keep my corn warm . still new to this and and want to do what's right for my corn. Please advise.

You should use a UTH not a bulb, the light will usually dry the
air too much. Snakes dont need lights.

Do you have a thermometer for your tank? I would start out with getting one of those first...one with a prob (long black cord coming out of the side, you should see It In the packaging). You can find them at Home Depot or Walmart for $9-12.

hi . I don't have a prob I have to get one of those . there is a thermometer on the heat mat. I have a wooden viv so heat mat is inside viv below bulb.

You don't need to use a bulb as well as a heat mat. The mat should keep floor (where the snake is) of the warm end at the correct temperature.

What's the temperature on the floor, immediately above the mat? It needs to be mid-80s at most.

hi , so are you saying is i leave the light off completely she'll be fine is that what your saying. all she needs is the heat mat, so what happens when mat turns off.

If the mat is in the viv, what is between the mat and the snake? Those mats get very hot and could burn or kill your snake. What are the temperature readings you are getting now with the thermometer you have now?

You may want to get a tile that is as big as the UTH and put it on the UTH, but I would also get at least a plug in lamp dimmer at Home Depot ($10) if you do not have the money for a thermastat. This will regulate the temperature. This is the set up I use.

I use ceramic wall tiles - like you'd put on the bathroom wall. If you can't find one large enough, just use as many as you need.

oh right . i have some but they are shiny one's are they ok or do they need to be the ruff kind.

James I use an UTH on its own in the summer but I have a 40 W red bulb that I have used when it has been very cold in the house during winter (ie sudden -40 degree cold snaps when the furnace couldn't keep up and the house dropped to 15 Celcius). As long as you have an UTH and your snake room is over about 17 Celcius you won't need the light. If your snake room temperature is quite low sometimes you can use the light, but the UTH is all most people use for corn snakes.

I have a 8x6" UTH and I use a slate tile that is 8x8" but you can use any kind of tile. I got mine for free at a tile shop, but sometimes you may have to pay a few bucks for each tile.

thanks guys you have all been very help thank you so much . I picnic a little want her to be happy and healthy.
