OK, it is getting cold by me and at night its getting below zero some nights, so I bought a red light to keep the tank at a good temp, just around 80 or below. Since snake need so many hours darkness Do you think the red light would affect my snake.

While a red light would accomplish the task, it would be better for you to get an undertank heater (UTH). Overhead incandescent lights will decrease humidity, and especially with winter coming, the air will be dry enough as it is.

What size is your tank? 10 gallons? 20 gallons? Let us know.

Well I think its like a 66 gallon. :crazy02: I know it would be better to have a smaller tank for my little corn but I can't afford it right plus thats what we had when I got her. I spray the tank everyday, would that keep it humid enouph? I will take a pic soon, just changed bedding today and rearanged so it looks good but a little empty still need to put some stuff back in.

my snakes all have a red light thats attched to a thermostat.. and its been working just fine. You can even buy actual moonlit type bulbs so its darker then the red light. But you will need to use a spray bottle for humidity if u choose the light. humidity should be around 40-50 % :)

i have a "red light" on with my corns 24-7. now i could be wrong in this, but as far as i understand they can't "see" the red light. they don't see colour, so they don't necessarily catch the red light. our eyes adjust to it easier as well (the military uses it because we don't need adjustment to go from red light to pitch black). so, all in all it's simply a "friendly" light when it comes to night time. that's why they make them red. a UTH is also really really good. DO NOT use hot rocks. also, get a digital thermometer. the ones you get at the pet store are ok, but not nearly as good at a digital one. i got one at wall mart the other day for $12.99. i simply keep it on all the time (it's supposed to last a year apparantly, we'll see). it doesn't really matter that your tank is too big, but it really does matter that you give it a warm area and a "normal" area. that's why i think the digital thermo is a really handy device, it's moveable! heh. since your tank is so big, give your snake two hides. one in the warm and one in the "normal" area. maybe keep the water in the middle area.

So long as you can maintain temperature and humidity, an overhead light is fine, so long as the snake can't reach up and touch it or any metal made hot by it. Undertank heaters are the prefered method for heating glass terrariums. Btw, I'm sure you already know this, but be sure to pepper that whole tank in hides. and a good layer of Aspen will encourage burrowing. I have a 10gl exo-terra for my corn and there are 4 hides in it. I even have one suspended between the two ends of a posable vine which Spur loves to hang out in. Monitor the temps and keep spraying to keep the humidity right and you shouldn't have any problems.
