Repti-Bark

Aurora13

Consumed by Corns
Petco recommended repti-bark (comes in a brick, you stick it in water and it expands) for substrate for my corn. I've used it without problem, and my corn seems to love it. Has anybody every come across any problems with it? i heard impaction can occur with some bedding materials, has anybody heard of any cases caused by repti bark?

I have been using it with no problem.. just feed outside of the enclosure :) Then the snake won't accidentally ingest any of the substrate

THANX

alright, we shouldnt have a problem then, anybody else have any bad/good experiences with repti bark?

I thought Repti-bark came in a bag like regular mulch?

Anyways, Repti-bark can get dry and give the snakes trouble shedding, so make sure to mist the tank every so often.

It's also on the messy side. The bark is reddish in color and you will notice a fine red dusty powder associated with it. Esspecially if you start misting the enclosure. IMO, it's harder to clean and not as sanitary as other substrates.

Oh yea! i know its messy, but it adds to the naturalistic setting my viv has. What fun is life without a little mess eh?

Just trying to give you as much info as possible. If your snakes are in a viv, it will make it look more natural if that is what you are looking for... If you have thirty plus snakes like some of us do, it just isn't practicle.

Good Luck!

I own 12 snakes and every single one is resting comfortably on Repti-bark. As a matter of fact I've been using the stuff in my tanks for more than 4 years now without a single problem.

Cleanup is no more difficult than taking a "scouper" and scouping the feces out. Newspaper cuts down on stench considerably.

Some tips:

-clean the tank VERY WELL before putting anything in it...
-always try to put a few layers of newspaper down as the bottom most layer and be SURE it does not stick up or crease anywhere, the snakes will definitely dig and try to mess it up
-put at least a 2 or 3" layer of bark on top of the newspaper and then immediately spray it down to a soaking wet. Even better if you mix it up as your spraying it too to get the bottom layers of chips.
-This initial spray helps get rid of the dust (it actually collects on the newspaper which is nice) and gives the chips initial moisture boost. My corns are lucky if they get a spray down once a month and I've NEVER had shedding problems.

-always feed outside of the tank and follow the above and you'll enjoy every second of the realism that us impractical hobbists who collect for the beauty not for the numbers enjoy... :noevil:

Gee, If I didn't know better I'd think you just took at cheap shot at me...And your reason is?

"collect for the beauty not for the numbers enjoy..."

You are quite the presumptuous idividual...Glad you know it all...

now , now children! JUST KIDDING, but hey theres no reason to fight over substrate! nobody was taking a stab at anybody and im quite sure nobody thinks they know it all. we're all corn lovers just the same

You are absolutely right!

I come to these forums to learn, meet people and share any knowledge I have with someone that might not be as experienced. Everyone has different opinions, but to come and make an unsoliciatid cheap shot at someone for no reason???

I could understand if this individual knew me or had a reason to dislike me, but to make a stupid blanket comment was ... oh forget about it. Perhaps all of your future questions should specifically addressed to homersimpson since he knows it all!

Good luck with your snakes and whatever substrate you choose.

holy cow dude, didn't mean to "take any shots" at you, just messin with you for bragging about your huge collection and being so practicle... Never at any time did I say I was the authority on anything when it comes to snakes (cause I'm definitely not)...

Truce...
