Hi there. Went to my local exotic pet store today (Herpeton in Austin, TX) to pick up a fuzzy and some new bedding for little one. They had no aspen bedding like I currently have in my viv - only pine. The lady there told me that pine could cause respiratory infections if used over the long term, which I have read elsewhere.

She recommended to me this particular bedding called "Repti Bark" made by Zoo Med. I noticed on the back it said it was made from the "ground bark of fir trees," which I know to be hazardous to snakes. However, elsewhere on the web and this forum people have mentioned using it with success.

I can't comment on the safety, but isn't that stuff pricey? I mean, compared to aspen? I buy bales of compacted aspen for between $8-12.
 
It was $7 for 4 quarts. Kind of pricey, but not too bad considering how inexpensive it is to keep a snake. What I'm mainly concerned about is the safety - otherwise I'm going to be an unhappy repeat customer tomorrow.
 
People have used it in the past. IIRC (and feel free to correct me) people said that when their snakes burrowed in it they came up with a bunch of dust in their nose. That could be a different bedding though, I can't keep them straight...
 
Well, it seems people have used it with success. I'm going to give it a go, even though the "fir" description on the back makes me anxious. Snake seems to like it, I guess. She's mostly interested in the new hide I picked up . . .
 
reptibark is safe..... as long as it stays dry and doesnt mold. Just make sure to sift it first to remove the little splinters that are also in the bag.

Another thing you can use, if you dont want or cant get aspen, is carefresh. Carefresh is actually very easy to use and the snakes can burrow into it easier.
 
I use it with all my corns, and I love it. No dust on the nose or anything like that. And, at least at my petco/smart they cost the exact same as the aspen. I just like it because it looks much more natural and it holds in humidity better.
 
I also use it for all my corns. I only have aspen for some of my kings (I think their black colour is prettier against the light aspen :)). In my animal shop aspen actually is a little more expensive than reptibark, not much though.
I've also never had any issues with dust on their noses, and for me the light colour of the corns stands out nicely against the dark background.
As long as the beasties have a bedding that's good for them, I can look at what I find prettiest I think :)
