Repti Carpet???

Hi I use astroturf as my substrate but after reading on this website I have learned that it is bad due to the bacteria levels. I was wondering if repti carpet is good because I have 2 hamsters I use aspen with and I want a more natural look for my corn. If nothing else though I will use my hamster's aspen for my corn also. I want to know about ReptiCarpet though because it looks like it would work well.

Aspen is actually the bedding of choice for most members here. It's absorbent, great for the corns to tunnel in, and easy to spot clean. Repti Carpet has the same disadvantage as astroturf as far as being a haven for bacteria when it gets soiled. It has to be changed out often, stinks, and robs the snakes of their natural instinct to burrow. Just buy a bigger bag when you get aspen for your hamster, your snake will love it. :)

Edit: I forgot to add to make sure you feed in a separate container, as ingesting aspen can cause impaction and possibly death.

Well carpet isn't exactly "natural" looking, now is it? I mean, when was the last time you saw Mohawk shag in the woods. ;)

Shredded aspen is the most common substrate for corns. Most cornsnake owners use it. Its nice looking, nice smelling, they can tunnel through it, cleanup is easy, and its affordable.

If you feed him in the viv, you might want to not do that with a particle substrate that he could ingest accidently. For feeding place him a plain plastic container. When he's done, put him back in the viv.

Reptile carpet is nice for small lizards, but I found it to be a pain with snakes. They were ALWAYS underneath it, which if you use an under tank heater, they can burn themselves if you're not using a tempreture controlling device. Or slithering around underneath they'd spill the water bowl somehow, and you have a wet mess on your hands. Snake poo is also more watery than anything, so it soaks in and you're constantly washing it seems like. And its expensive. I don't care what they say, when you wash it and air dry it, its never the nice flat shape it was when you bought it.

Hope that helps!

Thanks guys. I guess I will go ahead and use my aspen for my corn snake also. And no the repti carpet isnt very natural looking but I like the look of it I guess LOL. I feed in a seperate bin so no worries about ingesting the aspen. Do I have to swap the aspen out once a week as with my hamsters or can I do every month or so as I have been with the astro turf. Thanks guys for the quick answers and the help.

You will get differing opinions on how often to change out the aspen. Sone will say to change it once a week, others will say it is good until it starts smelling bad as long as you spot clean. However, since snakes are less messy than hamsters, I don't think a weekly change is necessary. Every month or two ought to be ok.

I Once Used That Crap In My King Snake's Cage And After 1 Day It Smelt Holy Crapola!!!! The Ole G/f Walked In And Gagged

Alright guys thanks for the help... I got her switched over to her 20 gallon now that she is a bit bigger, I switched to aspen and she hasnt resurfaced much since :p and I added a jungle background, a fake stump with holes to climb through and a wide variety of fake plants to really spruce her final home up. she LOVES to climb through the leafs and under the aspen. She really has come into her own self being in this cage compared to the smaller, plain one I had her in before. For her final home she is REALLY loving it. Thanks for all the advice and help.
