"rescuing" a corn

it's not really a rescue, but the pet store next to my work has a full grown corn (don't know sex or age) but he/she's huge and in a 5 gallon tank (they all are) the price tag is 100$ but don't you think a shop would wanna cut a break to get an adult that will never sell out of there? i've seen people sell proven adult corns online for like 40 dollars so i'm not sure if it's really worth it. what do you guys think? i mean i don't NEED another corn; and the guy that runs the shop is ok; this thing isn't tortured by any means, just in a small cage and i feel bad for it cause no one will ever buy it.

Well you're in a Catch 22 position. If you show any interest at all, then the shop isn't likely to drop the price.

Unless you've seen it in there for months, then don't assume you have any bargaining power. If it's a female, someone else could see the chance of a quick buck come breeding season and be prepared to pay $100. It could sell easily.

Ultimately, if you buy from this shop then you'll only be suppoorting their poor husbandry. In your place I'd try and walk away, but I know it must be hard.

Sad thing is.

Hello,

I understand how you feel I do that kind of thing all the time wanna rescue something but the problem is with it being a pet store in a few days theyll be another in its place maybe another adults. :( Maybe try talking to the petstore guy... work on him instead of buying the snake.

I agree with bitsy. If you show them they can get 100 bucks for a poorly kept anil´mal just because some kind person shows some sympathy then they'll do it again....soon enough you'll have 30 of them living at your house and the pet shop owner will be laughing all the way to the back whilst never making an effort to improve his husbandry.

yeah i know what you guys mean. the concept of supply and demand is very prevalent to me. the reason i want it more is just because i want an adult snake as a pet; i have neonates now which are fun but would enjoy an adult also you know? it's a pretty small pet store; i've heard people talking about pet stores that have hundreds of corn snakes: well this one has 2 adults and they can only get in a handfull of babies each season. i have a feeling that snake was a baby that didn't sell and eventually became an adult. that's the case which like 80% of their adult snakes, they have yearling boas and ball pythons too which simply do not sell and some of those have even been marked down. i was seriously considering buying and adult proven off the internet but 50 dollar shipping for a 45 dollar snake is just kinda silly. i'm not married to the idea but i was playing around with it and it would be fun to have a new snake!

I don't know how silly it is. If you can buy a relatively young, quality, proven breeder for about the same cost (or less) after shipping than you could buy a mystery adult at a pet store, it would seem like a good idea to me. :shrugs:

true; your right about that! but my best case scenario for the pet shop snake is the guy is desperate to get rid of it; plus he knows and likes me cause i work at the camera store next door so i get it for around 50.

A percentage of the $50 you pay for the snake will probably go directly toward restocking that 5 gallon aquarium with another snake. So in the end you will have a snake you didn't really want, you will be $50 poorer, and there will still be a snake in the 5 gallon. Besides, you will have adult snakes soon enough - once your neonates grow up. I see no reason to buy it.

Or you could tell the pet store owner that you'll continue to support his store only after he puts the snakes in proper enclosures.
