Researching before buying

Hi everybody. I've been interested in snakes for a while now and think I'm ready to make a purchase. I looked into ball pythons but realized I just don't have the space to accomidate a snake that gets that big. I have 3 young girls and was led to believe that corns are appropriate for kids. So i'm just introducing myself as i'm trying to learn as much as I can before buying. My name is Erin, I live in NW Indiana and grew up in Illinois. I have like I said 3 daughters ages 7, 4, and 2. I've been married going on 8yrs now. I also have a dog and cat. I'm a stay-at-home mom and student. I kept fish for about 10yrs, we just moved and I found homes for all my fish and have an empty tank sitting here. Just didn't have the desire to fill with fish again. New house, new hobby! lol I love taking pictures and am currently taking a photoshop class which is awesome. Ok well I could go on allll day so I'll stop here. It's great to meet you all and I look forward to great discussion!

Corns sound like the kind of snake you are looking for exactly.

Definitely spend lots of time reading the various posts on this forum, to gain all kinds of corn knowledge.

View the FAQ section for information on taking care of your corn.

Definitly take lots of time to browse the photo gallery and serpenco.com to see all the different morphs and decide what morph you'd like best.

Also I think one think everyone will suggest is to pick up Kathy Love's book "The Cornsnake Manual". It is a very well written guide for corn owners who's experience ranges from beginner to advanced.

We all look forward to you pictures. Congrats on the new hobby :)

Hi Erin and welcome to the world of corn snakes! You've come to the right place! And most definately, corn snakes are the best for young children. My 2 little ones have been able to handle my corns since they were old enough to know how to respect other living creatures (ie...not to hurt them by hitting, squeezing, etc). Here is a pic of my children, ages at time of pic - 8 and almost 6) with 2 adult corn snakes.

Welcome to the site! Very good of you to research before you get your corn. I got the snake first, then researched. Thankfully, I found this place and have had all my newbie questions answered and now have 3 very happy corns (number 4 arriving on friday). Be careful, they're addictive! Oh, and as to little ones being safe around corns, I've taken 2 of my snakes to work (I work in a kindergarten) and after a short safety lecture (for the snakes not to get injured by eager little hands) the kids are in love. All I hear when I go into work now is 'where's your snake? When are you bringing them back?' They just can't get enough of them :)

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions

And yes Kathy Love's book is great and answers most of your questions.

H i there and welcome to the forum.
Just wanted to add to the suggested reading above with these links. And if you have any question don't hesitate to ask.

Good Luck

Hello and welcome!! Cornsnakes make great pets  Check out our photo section for pictures of many different morphs.

Welcome to the site!
Yes, corns make fantastic snakes for children. I do some work in a reptile shop and children are always fascinated when I get the corns out to show them. ;-) The only concern I would have is that very young children may harm them (not deliberately, but just because they haven't yet learnt that animals should be treated gently.)

The only advice I would give you on that front is to always supervise your kids when they handle the snakes.

Other than that, they are perfect snakes and very easy to handle and care for!
Good luck with your brand new hobby!
:)
