Retired Breeder Snakes

HI,
This is just my second post.... :)
I love this forum. I have 3 corns snakes and a baby Ball Python.
The first corn that I got is an older "retired" breeder male.
He is so sweet, super tame and eats like a pig. I should post a picture when I figure that out. He a great pet.
Shortly after that I got two baby corns..one snow, one amel. They are great little guys too. ( I know Cornsnake Anon.)
So on to my question....
I used to breed and show dogs and sometimes a breeder may place a retired breeding animal to make room for young stock or they maybe didn't get along in the pack etc. (Not me...too much of a softy).
So again onto my question....LOL
Do snake breeders "retire" them from breeding at some point in their life??? Or are the breedable the whole life??
Again I just love this forum and know more corns are on my future.....but how do you decide on what colors!!!

Thanks
1.0 Retired "Osiris" creamsicle corn
0.0.1 Snow "Wolf"
0.0.1 Amel "Jellybean"
1.0 baby BP "Neo" and not to be forgotten....Lucy the beardie and Waldo the Veiled Chameleon

that is sooo cool that you used to breed dogs! welcome to the site...i dont know anything about the retired breeder snakes.... but about your statement on the colors...(or question with !!!)

It depends on if you are going to breed... see my husband and i went to the daytona expo and didnt know what kind of morph we wanted...we decided to go with something we could breed to what we have... we have a female snow het for butter, we bought a butter male...we have a diffuse male, so we bought a bloodred female... it didnt start that way. we just wanted one... began with an amel... then got a few more because we liked the pricetag that came with the morph... anery, and a pastel motley...etc.... now we are getting these pets mates for future breeding projects...

good luck and welcome to the addiction

I was going to retire my first and oldest female after this season, but she never recovered from her last clutch and died before I could make it official. She wasn't that old (10 years), but had given me about 250 hatchlings and deserved her retirement. Most of my other older snakes will probably be sold instead of retired (at least by me), simply because I won't have the space to house retired snakes with all the new ones I'm always adding. There are a couple of special snakes that I'll find the room for when it's time for them to retire, but that won't be for awhile yet.

As for deciding on what color to get...it often depends on what you like, over-all and more specifically. For example, I like pink/peach snakes...ghosts, lavenders, hypolavenders, opals, snows...as long as the individual has lots of pink/peach. I like purple too, so when I can afford one, a very purple lavender blood will be added to my collection. I've kept a few normals simply because I like their particular coloration and/or pattern. It's all really a very personal decision.

Off Topic

I have always wondered, why do people say that a breeder dog will be useless if it is accidently bred with some other type of dog or a mutt? They can't retain sperm can they haha? I just don't understand how that could in any way effect their next litter. Can you explain?

Glad to see you on the forums. I just got myself 5 baby corns. Good luck with your snakes!

I think they mean that particular litter from that dog. I don't think they mean the dog itself has been ruined for future breeding, per se.

As for retiring snakes, we picked up a 12 yr old female blizzard earlier this year and are keeping her as a senior citizen. They still make good pets. Maybe some people donate them to schools?

I'm into dog shows as well (I have one bitch, you can see her in my avatar) and honestly I can't imagine giving away dog 'cause it's too old. Pretty cruel way of treating dog.
