rheostat not working so well

The setting of my rheostat is at it lowest setting and now that it is getting warmer outside the cage is too hot. So I was wondering what is the best thermostat to use. Figure maybe that is the best way to go.

I also started with a rheostat and it drove me crazy, it needed checking and adjustment constantly or the heat would drop or spike like crazy if the room temp changed at all.
This is what I have been using for over a year now, it's worked great. Only $30

Yeah, I just bought a Zoo Med Rheostat from Petsmart:

On it LOWEST setting, it lowered my temp all of 4 degrees from normal. That is the setting right above "off".

I would recommend against buying these. At this point I am ready to just make my own. This thing is almost useless. What a waste of $20.

If your area gets warm enough that the mat needs to be off at certain times, then a thermostat is definitely a much better bet than a rheostat. Can't advise on make/model as I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic!

Wow, sounds like My dimmer switch works better then most rheostats. I can turn it all the way off if I choose and have quite a bit of play with it to get my temps right.

Don't buy a rheostat, go to Home Depot. Buy a dimmer switch for $10.
A dimmer switch will let you turn the power all the way off.

Keep in mind that rheostats only work well in rooms that stay a fairly constant temperature. (Basements, incubators, etc) They don't work so well in your living room that changes 10-20 degrees over the course of a day.
