Rheostat question?

I am using a Zoomed rheostat, the 500 watt deluxe model to control the temperature of a under the tank heater for my corn snake. The problem I am having with it is getting the temperature of the side of the cage that has the UTH under it below 90 degrees. I don't have this problem during the winter months. With a rheostat I should almost be able to turn off the heat pad. I am currently using about 8 to 10 layers of newspaper as a substrate and the temperature measurements are taken directly on top of the substrate. I am wondering if the 150-watt rheostat that Zoomed makes would work better regulating the temperature than the 500-watt model?

Any ideas on this?

Thanks

Hi There!

I also have the Zoomed Rheostat. It is called the Repti-Temp and it's for 150 watts maximum. My best advice to you would be to turn your setting to off if it's throwing that much heat off.

Right now, in Pennsylvania (where I am) I only really have to put the heating pad on low at night because the tank has been maintaining an interior 80 - 85 degrees.

Maybe you could go with a lower wattage version like I have. Are you running anything else off it, like another under tank heater?

I have 150 watt zoomed rheostats on three heating pads and since its been so hot here in CA, i basically put them as low as i can without turning them off. I like the 150 watt model better because of the area i live in but maybe you will have to switch back and forth depending on the season :shrugs:

Rheostat question

I am only using the UTH to heat one side of the enclosure and currently the ambient temperature of the enclosure is around 78 to 80 degrees. I will try the 150-watt rheostat and see how that works.

Thanks

I never bothered with a rheostat. I bought the state-of-the-art thermostat available at bigappleherp.com. It sells for about $110, but LET ME TELL YOU...This sucker performs EXACTLY how you would expect a device that costs that much to perform. The temp ALWAYS stays around 85-86 degrees on the warm end...and drops to about 77 degrees at night. The temp is ALWAYS perfect and always accurate to within one degree of where it is set.

i wonder, how would that little sucker work for warming eggs? one of the reasons i don't plan on breeding is because of the heating problem. My house is alwasy warm, but CA has actually had some random weather days (suny one day cold the next), and i worry about being able to keep some little thing exactly 82 degrees....

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it for any heating purpose where the temp must be EXACT. This thing is even better than the thermostat you have in your HOUSE at controlling the exact temperature. The thing is though...if and when you get it...you have to call the guy for advice on how to set it up. If you dont set it up the right way, it wont work as well as it could. I wasnt very optimistic about it when I first got it, because I thought the way that they raved about it on the website was all hype. I found out very quickly that it wasnt. This is a great product! Maybe the temp wont stay EXACTLY at 82 degrees all the time...but PRETTY DARN CLOSE. Like I said...it will stay to within 1 to possibly 2 degrees of the temperature it is set at. It will NEVER, EVER fluctuate by more than 2 degrees from the set temp though, I can promise you that. I allow 2 degrees because a large change in your house temperature does affect it slightly, but NEVER by more than 2 degrees. If your house temp is fairly constant, it wont ever fluctuate by more than 1 degree. It is the herp power proportional thermostat for $109.95

P.S. I would just like to clarify something....NO, I DO NOT WORK FOR BIG APPLE HERPETOLOGICAL!!!...LOL. I am giving a great review for their product because I own one, and I can see how great it works.

:D

How many heating devices will the big apple thermostat contol? I currently have 8 cages and would hate to spend $100+ on one for each!

Thanks for the info.

Well Sue,

Thats a good question...Im not really sure. See...I only have 1 snake, period...so its not an issue for me. He is very spoiled...LOL. I was thinking that maybe one day he should have his own little crown...lmao. I bet you could use the thermostat for CERTAINLY more than one cage. Im not sure...you would have to find out the wattage of your heating devices and then find out the maximum watts that the thermostat can handle. Im not 100% sure...but I think the number of watts the thermostat can control is on the website in the ad for it.

P.S. Sue

I just checked it out...the maximum load of the thermostat is 300 watts. So, if you happen to be using heating pads to heat your enclosures...youre in great shape, since each heating pad probably uses less than 30 watts.
Looking back...I initially thought that $110 was a lot of money. But, now that I have this thing...I think it was well worth the money because of the accuracy it gives you. When they talk about...."if it was a diamond...it would be flawless" Well, I would be hard pressed to disagree :D
