Rhino Rat Update~

Simon

Corn Manic
Just wanted to update on my Rhino Rat Snakes~

These guys are awesome!!

Man are these the best Asian rats to own!

I should start breeding them next year~
So hopefully I'll be able to produce these in 2005~~!!

Here she is:

What do you think of them?

Simon,

They're VERY pretty but what exactly is it that make them the "best Asian rats to own"? Is it the way the look, their demeanor or perhaps some other attribute? Just curious...

Simon,

Awesome snakes! We may have to hook up in the future. You still got the buddy stateside who can ship for you? ;)

My husband and I have wanted a pair of these since we first read about them in the Reptiles Magazine. I asked and searched around and couldn't find anyone who was breeding them.

So if you know of someone here in the states, or I can wait, just drop me a line.

Beautiful! May I ask what their temperament is like? Do they readily eat f/t rodents? Thanks!

Traci

Thanks all for the comments~

CptCupcakes,
Yup you're right. But guess what? Other than the black and white markings on it...you'll see that there are actually there are a few tint of bluish tone in between~ You can't really see the bluish tone in it because of the photo, but if you see it in real life, you'll know that its has quite a bit of blue tone in it~

Terra,
The reason why I say that they're the best Asian Rats to own is because the ease (in my opinion) of the care that they need. I have owned a lot of Asian Rat snakes in the past, to mention a few mandarin, 100 flower, frenata, dinodon, chinese king rat, and so on, these have been the easiest. Also in my opinion one of the prettiest too. So that is why it makes them the best asian rats to own.

Taceas,
Yup~ Ken is the man~! He is a very helpful person and very generous person. So I know that he would help me out to ship if you were to need me to ship them to you. I know a few breeders in the States that breeds these though. 1) Kathy Love. This is the first year for her to produce these. In the other years, those Rhino Rats have been laying slugs for her..but this year finally she is able to prouce them. I saw my first Rhino Rats at the Love's place 2) Rick Cunningham he has a few of these for sale every year. That is where I got 1.3 of them from. 3) Glenn Polanco but then I have been trying to contact him for a year now...he hasn't replied me...cause he was to replace one of the males that I got from him...and he said he would..but that was back in Sept of 2003...and he never replied or responded after that.. but I did get some stuff from him. So I know he's a good guy. Just don't understand why he didn't contact me back....

Traci1,
Their temperment is quite good. I never handle them so they are a bit on the nippy side for me. But even thought they are a bit nippier than the corn snakes, they're actually quite good if you compare them to the other asian rat snakes that I have owned. At least I am able to handle them without having my hand bleed with blood all over the place...LOL.....so I am sure that with some handling, they would be good~~

Are tehy readily to eat f/t rodents...this I am for sure...NO. It is actually quite hard getting them to eat. I had to feed them guppy/rosy/gold fish at first in order to get them to eat. Then it was getting them to eat scented fish and finally onto rodents. It was hard....and trust me...not a bit fun at all....very fustrating..BUT once you get them on rodents they're good for life.....Right now I have 1.4 of them (as I stated before 1.3 are from Rick Cunningham 1.1 from Glenn Polanco (and the male died and Glenn promised a replacement of the male...which he hasn't done) and I have all of them eating on rodents right now. I got 0.3 of them to eat f/t rodents and used to have the male on f/t...but all of a suddent 3 months ago..he decided he didn't want to eat f/t anymore...and wants live....the other 0.1 still wants live all the way...its hard getting her to eat.... she seldomly takes in f/t with a bit of teasing...but its hard work as she is more frightened than to want to eat the f/t rodent....

Thanks again all for the great comments~!!
I love these guys to death!!

wow those are really beautiofull snakes ! maybe sometime in the future ill get one (or two)

the "horn" is quite impressive and the green color is beautifull. The onlyu thing bugging would be the feeding part ...

Hey how long/big do they become ? are they like corns in term of needs ?

Bibz,

They don't get too big. Around 3 feet..maybe 4.
Well I think that they would need a bit more humidity than corns. I see them soaked in water about 90% of their time. Or it just might be because I am so lucky that I see them in their water bowl all the time....LOL...
but I do keep them on aspen bedding or beta chip beddings.

Just the feeding part is a bit of a pain in the butt to start...but once they get on rodents its as easy as the corns~~

Leia,

Nope not at all. In fact when shedding times comes the horn is usally first place to be 'ripped' off.....
most of the time you can't make out the horn but I have a couple of times where the horn was in one piece~ but it doesn't interfere with the sheeding at all~

I want a Dinodon Simon!!! You need to start breeding those! Nice rat snakes though. You know I love all your snakes.

LOL
thanks MegF~

Well right now I have 0 Dinodon in my collection...
heck you should of took the Dinodon when you had the chance...and trust me the Albino Dinodon was even better in person....and if you bred it with a normal creativing het albions you'll be able to sell the normals plus get your 'normal' Dinodon which you like better~~ LOL
oh well...
I told you...things goes fast~!

Yeah, yeah, you also told me you didn't ship to the U.S! It was not to be I guess......I'll just wimper a bit and slowly drag myself away.....Alas, my Dinodon :sobstory:

LOL
I don't ship to the US. But I could bring them to Ken (kenster) and he would help us out (he's such a great guy) and you still could of gotten it~~~ LOL

but there is no way of turning back~~ LOL
unless you can find the people that I sold my dinodons to.....LOL

Yeah I would have no problems shipping anything for you Simon. Although I am sure if I had to hold those rhinos a few days I would have to get a pair for myself...

Hmmm, perhaps I'll have to have Guido the Legbreaker hunt down the Dinodons and get them shipped to me :) If you ever hear the buyers want to sell them, let me know......of course, they'll probably want loads of cash since they know a desperate woman when they see one!

The full name is Dinodon Rufuzanatum. I think Simon calls them Red-Chained snakes. He posted a picture on the miscellaneous section I think it was. You could go back on the search portion and put in Red-Chained to see what they looked like.
