Salmanila?

Hey everyone,

I've been reading about the forums and noticed a couple posts about salmanila and washing hands, etc. If I understand correctly, salmanila can be transmitted from the snake into people right? Could someone clerify this for me. Thanks.

All reptiles carry Salmanila. This is one of the bacteria that they use to help digest food. When handling a snake, the bacteria can be transfered to the handler. If the handler then puts his/her hand in their mouth, rubs their eyes, or prepares food, without washing your hands, there is a chance that the salmanila can be contracted.

and trust me, you don't want to have to deal with this. It is very nasty.

Although Salmonella is found on the skin and scales of all Reptiles, especially pet Turtles, the chances of getting it are very rare if a few basic hygene steps are followed. After you handle your snake or clean the vivarium wash your hands with a good soap (anti bacterial if you are paranoid). Don't let your snake crawl around on the kitchen table. Don't spend a lot of time cuddling your snake. Don't kiss your snake (weird I know but some kids do it). And last, don't let your snake drink out of you water glass. :crazy02:

Im not trying to steal this post or anything but does anybody know anyone who got salmonella from snakes (corn). There alot of breeders here. Have any of you gotten salmonella?? And I do wash my hands before and after handleing.

I kiss all my pets too. Except my frogs lol, they are a bit to moist. It just seemed so much more likely to catch salmonella from a moist kiss.uke02:

I'm assuming if there is a warning out there (and I've read it in other reptile sources than this one), someone has. I would not take the chance when you know there is the possiblility. Getting Salmonella is not something anyone ever wants to do. It's a nasty disease! Just use comman sense and wash your hands after handling your reptiles. I do the same after playing with the dogs, horses, or any other animal.

I have had Salmonella, but I got it from under cooked Chicken. One of the girls at the pet store that I frequent here got Salmonella from one of the snakes she cares for. At least that is what the DR told her. so I know it can happen. I can't remember which kind of snake atm though.

some of the contents of that first link are just SAD, becuase of what was often done with the animal after someone got salmonella... there was one i read where they had the critter euthanized becuase of it....totally unfair.
