I have just been given an aquarium to keep my snakes in, it hasn't been cleaned though since the fish have been in it. How and what do you recommend i clean it with? Thanks.
 
10% Bleach solution, Rinse it again and again and again. Leave it out in the sun to dry all day (Well, i suppose at this time you can't do that.) Make sure theres no grime or anything left on it and it smells neutral and clean.
 
What about a solution of water and those sterilising tablets you use to clean babies bottles with? Or are those not strong enough?
 
I fill it up about 1/3 of the way then scrub the entire tank. But you could make the solution seperatly and just scrub the tank, Either way will work.

Just remember when you think you've rinsed it enough, rinse it one more time!.
 
I second that....Never fill up second hand fish tanks....And the bleach will be enough, no need for baby sterilizing tablets... Unless you already have them...

Oh, and make sure you scrub the corners and up the seals well thats where alot of bacteria will build up.

I house my corn in a wonderful hand-built ex-saltwater fish tank vivarium. The man I got it from made it out of 3/4" plywood and painted the inside with waterproof fishtank paint. When I recieved it I cleaned it much as the other posters explained, MAKING SURE to scrub all of the corners well. I rinsed it completely a few times with clean water and did not put her in it for a week, mostly 'cause I was setting up heating and testing temperatures, but also to let it "air out".
She has been thriving in it for 2.5 years.
 
first rule of thumb when cleaning used fish tanks....you can't clean them enough. After you feel it is clean (I use a small amount of dish detergent) then I go back clean it again, and then clean it with the bleach solution. And then one more time, lol. I get a little anal, but I have a number of second hand tanks that I just always wanted to be sure it was as good as I can get it.
 
I have been cleaning the tank all night, cleaned it with a bleach solution first of all then i rinsed it out and dryed it. Then i got the feeling it wasn't clean so I went to my uncles for some baby bottle sterilising tablets and cleaned it out with that solution too. Should be clean now. :) Now all I need is to make a lid.
