Sending snakes abroad

Plissken

Crazy Snail Lady
Hi everyone, I have a query.
Let me first explain:
I don't have a snake yet, but I hope to have one soon, and if this goes well I am interested in starting up some sort of collection.
I live in England, and I am considering possibly moving to America in a few years time. I should have snakes by then, so in the event of my moving abroad, how would I transport my snakes?
Is it even legal to send exotic animals from UK to USA? And would they need to be quarantined or have special vaccinations?
I ask also in case I would ever like to purchase an animal from someone overseas.
And can long journeys such as this be stressful for a snake? Does anyone have any experience with transporting snakes long distances?

Thanks in advance for reading the obscure question, I can't find information on this anywhere :shrugs:

I'm in the UK. Although I haven't brought reptiles in from abroad, I know people who have.

If you're bringing in reptiles from other EC countries, then as long as they aren't CITES-protected, you don't need any kind of import licence, permits, quarantine etc. Coach trips to European shows like Hamm are regular outings, so you could even go and pick up some animals abroad yourself.

Even CITES species can be brought into the UK, as long as all of the appropriate paperwork is in order. Do expect to spend some time in customs with those, as they'll (hopefully) want to make extra sure that your paperwork is in order.

Bringing animals from the USA into the UK is a whole nother ball game. Generally, it's a load of hassle for the sellers, who need to jump through many hoops at the USA end. You have to be placing a very large order to justify their work. I know of one person who ordered $10,000 worth of reptiles, only to be told that it wasn't worth the seller's while to go through the expense of exporting them.

Having said that. I know that Rich Z has shipped some very fine Corns over here in his time and they are the backbone of several quality UK breeding programmes.
