Sex Differences...

IndianaCorn

New member
I was wondering all the behavioral and physical differences of each of the sexes, to better help me decide the sex of my next corn. For example of a few questions i have...

Is one more likely to be better tempered than the other (based on your experiences)?

Does one sex usually get bigger than the other (assuming the females aren't used to breed)?

Does sex have anything to do with how active the snake is (assuming all other factors remain constant)?

Which sex would be the best to get if not planning to breed (based on your experience)?

If you read this post please don't hesitate to post your experiences and opinions... Thanks in advance for all your help

Q: Is one more likely to be better tempered than the other (based on your experiences)?

A: mm... hard one there. I don't think there are any, but if I was forced to choose, I'd say a female is more tempermental, but only during egg laying since they go into a protective mode (as do all mothers). That and I also have one nasty female who's remained aggressive even at her ripe age of 4 years old.

Q: Does one sex usually get bigger than the other (assuming the females aren't used to breed)?

A: Males get bigger. Females get around 3 ft average, some males can get up to 6 ft long (but rare) and are usually something like 4 ft average.

Q: Does sex have anything to do with how active the snake is (assuming all other factors remain constant)?

A: Not generally, but some males will go into a "search" mode and be very active during breeding season.

Q: Which sex would be the best to get if not planning to breed (based on your experience)?

A: Mmm... that depends. Females can have problems with egg binding and decide to lay eggs even if not bred (in which case all the eggs are duds). This is not bad persey, but it drains females of nutrients (I think most females resorb their eggs if they don't lay them anyway). Females stay smaller, so easier to house. Males are bigger, so might need bigger housing. IMHO a male would be better if you want a larger more impressive corn.
