Well, my daughter came for the weekend and fell in love with these two. She named them and it is going to be difficult to feed off the babies if they mate. Dang, foiled again :grin01:

They are sooo cute!
Are they well behaved? And are you finding they smell less? I may try to talk my girls nto trading in Yang for a pair of those. Too adorable :)

Yes Traci, they are very well behaved. I got them 10 days ago and didn't handle them until tonight. They seemed to "trust" me entirely and it was almost enough to melt even my cold heart. I must be slipping :grin01:
There was absolutely NO odor in that tank. They are much cleaner than domestic mice. :wavey:

now look what you made me do...

LOL. you inspired me to pick some up myself!

Yeah, from what I've read they should be handled regularly to maintain a calm disposition(sounds like a snake care sheet). Also, if you keep too many in one viv, they will fight and try to chew each others tails off! I've been told that 2 pairs can be kept together peacefully :wavey:

yes a couple of mine already have had their tails shortened by previous cagemates. I read that they like to chew anything and everything. I have four in a 20 gallon long, 2 males 2 females. Supposedly the males won't try to kill each other like domestic mice do.

You want a real hoot, Traci. Get them a wheel! It's hilarious to see both of them get into the wheel and try to run in opposite directions! Of course you have to stay up late or get up early as these critters are strictly nocturnal.

How much do those cost? heck im so tired of the mice i have, they stink something fierce like a DAY after i clean and i have no place to put them eccept for in my room

They wanted $7.99 a piece for them, but I got the pair for $6.00. I have been doing business with this particular shop for at least 15 yrs. Plus they had tons of them and probably weren't selling very many.

They are too cute, is it just me or are they larger than domestics? By the way you described their personalities, maybe CHEWbaka would have been a more appropriate name lol.

Yeah, they are a lot larger than domestics. My daughter wanted to use egyptian names for some reason. Shabaka was a Nubian, the first Ethiopian born Pharoh.

my friend offered me a free egyptian spiny tailed mouse. its a male and she wants females. The only thing is we both have to find places that sell females in New Brunswick canada or nova scotia

Hey Mike,

I am curious. Are the Egyptian Spiny Mice one of the breeds that can not be picked up by the tail? I know some different species can slough off the skin of their tails super easy (ex. African Pygmy Mice).

On another note. Do you (or anyone else) know of any problems feeding EGM to snakes? It would certainly be a nice alternative for picky eaters!

Good luck with them!

Pat, they do have sensitive tails and it is not recommended to pick them up by the tail. I have not had a problem doing it though. I was told that if a snake ate one of these backwards, it could cause a problem. I don't intend to let them get that big where the hair is too coarse. So far, these are just fantastic rodents, virtually odorless and extremely tame. The major drawback is the litter size.

Dang it guys! This almost makes me want rodents again...but I can't have them! I mean...I probably could talk my rents into it if I really wanted to, but I don't want to! I was sad when my last gerbil got eaten by my bro's cat...but I was relieved at the same time....I feel bad for saying that, but it's true.
But these little buggers are so adorable! I always loved rats tho...And these are kinda like big mice...They're cute, congrats!
