The reason albino doesn't compute for most of us is that it literally means "white" in Latin. Now some could interpret that as the absent pigment leaving behind white (white borders in the case of amels). The fact of the matter is that terms with vague and useless meanings still linger because the average lay person has at best an elementary knowledge of biology, as well as etymology.
