shedding question

Lurking around the corner
if a snake has red eyes, how can i tell when he's in the blue? his colors are dull... but i cant tell if he's started the shedding cycle yet.

The eyes will look like your snake has cataracts...they will be occluded...milky colored if you will...

An amels eyes turn from a deep red to a light pinkish color when they are in shed. You will probably notice the dulled body colors more than the dulled eyes in amels.

If you notice that his colors are dull it is likely he has started the shedding cycle.

Yay!!! The first shed is always so exciting! When my amel is in shed I notice the dulled pink-ish eyes like mattsnake said more than anything else.

Oh yeah! And make sure that you increase the humidity for the little bugger when he's getting ready to shed. That way the shed will come off all in one piece rather than in lots of little ones (not only is it cooler this way, but it makes it easier to tell if the snake has completely shed, and is just generally better). I usually mist my snakes when they are getting ready to shed, or add a humidity box for them. Good luck!!!

^_^ YaY !

ok i have another question regarding feeding. i fed Squee (my baby amel) last night and he took it (yay) and i was wondering if i should feed him again on his scheduled time ( i was going to up to 2 pinks) or if i should wait until he sheds. i dont want to waste food b/c i have to drive 45min to get more...
-shrugs-

Typically you just offer food on your regular schedule. Some snakes won't eat during a shed cycle and some have no problem eating. I just went through my first shed with my new snow. She became inactive for about 3 or 4 nights and her eyes were a bit dull but it was still hard for me to tell having an untrained eye. Then Friday evenine was her sheduled time to feed. When I took her out her eyes looked clear, she ate just as well as ever and low and behold she shed that night. Anyways, sorry to ramble. Hope this helps out.

I second the advice to offer food on your regular schedule. My amel eats no matter what (in blue, shedding, you name it!), my other two refuse to eat from the time they go blue until after they shed. You never know until you try and its better to try. Besides, if he refuses his meal, all you have to do is toss it in a little baggie and throw it in the freezer (the pinky, not the snake, obviously) and then next time all you have to do is defrost it and you have a meal ready to serve!

AHHH!! OMG!!! Little Squee shed last night!!! I found his skin this morning when I got up and looked in his tank. I'm so excited!! LoL I danced around my bathroom before getting ready for school LoL :D:D:D:D:D

What fun! My Shermy is going to shed any time now, and his brother-in-law's new little fiancee, Jo Cool, just shed overnight! They're amels too! It's so exciting when they shed, and they look so bright and gorgeous afterwards. Hope you got a good look at your snake's "paleness" - I still wonder, is shed time near? But when they're pale, you really know it!
