Shedding

My corn snake that I bought yesterday looks like within the next few days it might shed. Do I need to spray the tank or anything??? I have a small water bowl for him/her at the moment. Should I buy a bigger one for it to submerge itself, is this a neccesity?

Thanks,

Andy

I doubt you need to worry, but I don't know what your temps or humidity levels are so its hard to say... If you are worried you could make a hide out of a plastic butter dish (or tupperware, etc.), cut a hole for your snake to crawl in and out of, and line the bottom with moist paper towels. Then place the whole thing in your viv. If your snake needs higher humidity it can hide in there.

If your humdity is around 50% + you should have a good shed. Soaking for shed is overrated and really is only needed if you have in complete sheds.

Ok. I think I'll buy a humidity gague. If my humidity is too low, do I make it higher bye spraying??? Also, What is the best humidity for the snake normally???

Thanks Andy

Also, Can I hold my snake yet??? I bought him/her on Sunday, It's now Monday and he/she seems happy, cruising and climbing and flincking its tongue. The only problem is it hasn't fed yet, but I think that is because it might shed soon. It's skin looks a little darker etc etc But it's eyes are still clear. How long could it be before it sheds???

Shall I wait until after a feed and when it's shed???

Thanks,

Andy

Good luck with the shed.

A hygrometer is a good choice. I don't know where you live, but sometimes the humidity is high enough in the surroundings anyway. (Like Florida etc.). My Corns have always a nice shed at around 50-60% humidity. Never had to soak them.
To the handling: you said you got him yesterday. I'd give him another day to settle in. As for the feeding, wait until he has shed or at least another couple of days. Digestion needs a lot of fluids and shedding to. So it could be that the shed is not as good when the snake needs to digest at the same time.

I always feed my snakes even right before shedding. Never had any problems. Often they just take a drink after eating anyway.

Jicin is right. You will find out which ones feed during shed and which ones don't. But for now, offer food. Your snakie will know best.
