Shedding...

I read up on the shedding process with the search but I had another question.. My snake hasn't shed with me yet so I wanna be ready when he does. My snake has the red eyes so when hes in his "blue" state will the blue show up in his eyes easy enough for me to notice or would I really have to look?

And its normal to "try" to handle them or feed them during this state to get the reaction of the snake? If he starts to show signs that he doesnt want to be touched or feed during this leave him alone..

Also how long does it take for them to get the whole coat off? Is it like a night or a couple days or what?

Thanks...
Derek

I’m not sure what reaction you’re trying to get from your snake, but I do feed mine on schedule whether she is in blue or not. Handling I would personally leave until after your snake has shed.

Once the actually shedding process starts it’s a matter of minutes until it is over.

I hope this helps.

Steve

I have red eye corns & it took me after the 3rd shed to figure out what the blue looks like...lol Seriously! I just could not see it & I handle mine a lot. This is what I notice now is that the entire eye clouds over, to the point where you no longer see his pupil. Mine have a dark red pupil & light red around. When in blue I no longer can see the pupil it just all blends in together one color, for me it looks like a pinkish haze.

HTH,

Hi- I (well it's really my son's but anyway) also have an albino COrn-red eyes and actually, the skin will start to appear dull and dry looking a few days before the eyes go into "blue"- which with red eyes-they just llok a bit cloudy--the shed then happens about 2 days after that...we'vehad about 5 sheds since we got her in Feb 07..

One more question.... During his shedding period is he gonna hide a lot? Like iv noticed he has moved out of his hide in a couple days.. He may come out at night when im sleeping but when I look hes always in the same place.. Is this because he is shedding?

Yes. Their eyesight is obscured when in blue. In the wild this would make them more susceptible to predation…hence they hunker down during this period.

Mine just had his first shed with us. I figured it was about time. He ate last Tuesday (the 4th) and did his usual "hide and digest" thing. He normaly would have come out to resume his escape route searching by Friday, but he stayed in his hide, which is what made me suspect he was in blue. Saturday the 8th was his next schedule feeding, so I got a pinky ready and was going to let his actions tell me if he wanted to eat. When I removed the coconut hide, he stayed curled up. His eyes were completely clouded over and he had that blueish tint to his skin. When I picked him up, he stayed curled up in my palm, with NO attempt to move, other than move his head side to side and tongue flicking like mad. I took this to mean he wasn't going to eat, so without even trying to feed him, I just put him back and let him curl back up inside his coconut.

He finally shed Wednesday night (the 12th) and ate like a champ that evening for me (and of course, went right back into his hide to digest). I'll weigh him again Sunday for his next feeding, and depending on his weight, will offer 2 small pinkies, which should give me time to clean out his viv and put in clean aspen.

Good luck with yours!

I actually have an Amel that once she is in the blue stage it is very obvious..her eyes get grey powdery looking..Funny thing is it has taken us a while to realize then the day she sheds she will almost look what we think is normal ..so your searching for a shed and nothing..next day there is a shed..it is kind of weird.
My Ambers also get very cloudy eyes..some of my other morphs it is much harder to tell when they are in the blue stage but the attitude and they way they act generally is a good sign what is about to happen..it is always fun to find a fresh shed..It feels so cool if you catch it right after it happens and it hasnt dried out:)

Good luck..Let us know how things turn out:)
