Sheding/puking question

AlbinoOkeetee

New member
Hi everybody. I just recently got my first baby corn, an Albino Okeetee. She is just now a little over a week old. I got her to eat her first baby pinkie two days prior to her first shed, which was last night. Well when I woke up this morning, she was still working on her sheding, but she had puked back up her pinkie, which was pretty deteriorated and nasty. Is this normal? I figured she was just stressed about her big ordeal, but I just wanted to check.

Puking is never normal. If your corn hadn't yet shed then feeding wasn't really necessary. Most people give corns their first feeding after they shed. What I would do is give it a few days on its own to settle in and then try feeding it again.

Yes regurgitation is never normal.
Leave if alone for at least 7-10 days before you feed it again. This is done to help the snake rebuild it's stomach acid so that it can digest it's food again. During these 7-10 days remember and try not to disturb it. Just give it fresh water and that is it. NO HANDLING AT ALL.

After the 7-10 days try offering food again and do not disturb it again for at least 2-3 days for it to digest. If no regurgitation occurs after 3 meals then it's say to handle your snake again.

Good Luck and Happy Herping!

feeding/puking question

Ahhh i see. Well, the breeder I purchased her from told me to wait a week and then try to feed, so I waited 8 days. I figured that was long enough, they didnt mention waiting til after the first shed. I was having trouble finding what I felt was a trustworthy breeder, but when I found this person, I felt a better about the ordeal. I think it must just have been a mis communication. I will take and follow your advice. Thankx alot

A word of advice AlbinoOkeetee...it is better to make sure a hatchling is an established feeder before getting it. I've never heard of anyone selling their babies BEFORE the first shed, or before it has eaten.

well

out of all my corns I have one lone female who will regurg if I feed her near shed time

Your snake may be similar. So you can watch and if your corn is going into shed you can hold off on feeding it until its done.

CornCrazy,
I have noticed a few breeders in the US and Canada that do actually sell their snakes before they have their first shed. This is done mainly because of lack of room. They just want to get the babies out as soon as possible. BUT there is one thing that has a big differnce in these unfed snakes and fed snakes. The prices are usally cut in half.....so a fed normal might be going for 20 dollars a piece where as an unfed normal might be going for 5-10 dollars only.
But personally....I wouldn't want to sell these unfed ones.....might ruin one's reputation (unless stated that these are unfed hatchlings and that the buyer is willing to take the risk)

I would not sell anything before their first shed. After their first shed, I would know if they are keepers or non keepers. Selling them before first shed, might be selling some really nice looking snakes that I want to be keepers...LOL...so I would never do that...

but yeah I would agree with CornCrazy that people shouldn't be selling their corns out before they had at least 3 meals....

I had a similar thing happen, except this was my corns second meal (ever) and she regurgitated, I thought hatchlings needed to eat at least once a week,...how long can she go without eating, so I know when to freak out? (sorry it's such a newbie question) I am in the middle of trying all the different ways of getting her to eat Ie just a head, in a bag, scented, (with a fox on some rocks, i will not eat green pinkies and ham I will not eat them cornsnake i am)

MissMonkey,

Keep trying and your corn should eat soon. Don't worry that much yet. Some babies like to go off feed sometimes. For hatchlings, going off feed for a month or so would be quite worrying....of course there are some that could last longer and some less....but on average a month is around a time that you'll have to worry.

Good Luck and Happy Herping!

He AlbinoOkeetee do you own The Corn snake manual by Kathy Love? it is a great book wich wil learn you a lot about corns! almost everybody in this forum will agree with me that it is worth the mony!
