I got my first snake today! She's an '04 Snow. Still working on narrowing down the names. I like Makayli. Anyways I have a situation with the hot side of my tank and it is as follows:
I have a UTH under one side of the tank. I am using aspen about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep. For the last several days I have been watching the temps and in order to get the temps on top of the substrate around 83ish the temp on the glass has to be around 88 or so. So I put down a couple layers of newspaper and a paper towel (so she can get burned), but that gets me back to square one. In order to keep temps on substrate right I have to increase the UTH which makes the newspaper/paper towel surface hot. I guess I'm afraid that she will get burned if she burrows under the substrate, which is the first thing she did on the cool side when I put her in the viv. Any ideas of what I can do?

Also, I know that people have slightly varying opinions on temps, but mid to low 80's seems to be a general consensus. Can she digest alright in low 80 degree temps?

Zwyatt, I think your 83 on the surface and 88 on the glass is just fine. Remember that corns thermoregulate themselves. They know what's too hot and too cool for digestion and will seek the most optimal spot. Don't worry about 88 on the glass. The surface you have on the very bottom is newspaper/paper towel and 88 won't produce any burning on your corn. I was forced to do the very same thing. I sustain 82 on the surface and around 90 directly on the glass. My snow no longer burrows down to the paper towel on the hot side (likely because that's too warm for her).

Our responsibility as herpers is to provide the best possible environment we can for our snakes, but don't forget they're not total idiots. They know where to go for what they need. Sounds like you're on the road to success. Your 83 is perfect for digestion for your corn.

Also, I see that you're new here on the forums and that you've asked a few questions here and there. If you haven't already you may want to purchase Kathy and Bill Love's Cornsnake Manual. You should be able to find it at most chain pet stores. If not, you can buy it directly from their website at www.cornutopia.com. This website contains all of that info and more on these pages, but it's good to have a reference handy at home that you can grab or just leasurely read.

Welcome to the site and good luck with your snow. I started with a yearling snow myself.

Thanks

Hey Arson thanks for the help. I have the Corn Snake Manual and actually got my snake from Kathy Love. I was curious about the burning b/c in another post I read something about that they couldn't tell the temperature at one specific part of their body, but rather just control their "overall" temp. So this could result in a burn. So far I haven't seen her burrowing anymore, but I am trying to stay away as much as possible to give her her "3 days". Once she's settled in I will observe her more to make sure she isn't burrowing. So far from what I have seen she is pretty active in exploring her new surroundings. Thanks again for the help!

congrats!

i got my second corn, a hatcling cremesicle from kathy love, really really beautiful snake, i'm very pleased. she's my breeder of choice, you got a real winner, i'm sure.

Hi i'm not sure if this will help you and i am new to corn's but ive got a piece of polystyrene on top of my UTH which doesn't get to hot but doesn't effect the temp's in my viv, it's thicker than paper etc so you shouldn't have to worry about your snake getting burnt. Hope i helped. :)

Congrats on the new snake! I also got a 04 snow from Kathy. The snake is doing great!

Good luck with the new one!

Thanks for the tips and encouragement everyone! She still seems to be quite busy exploring her new home. And so far she seems to be really keen on lounging up near the top on her stick and plant.
