Shooting blanks?

my proven female normal was paired with a striped unproven male and she just laid about 20 slugs... She was once a successful triple clutcher (although she had last year off).

If you were playing the odds- do you think it's him shooting blanks or her?

Thanks

she ate like a champ too, I tried to feed her enough and even used some reptivite multi-vit. IMO she's even a little on the chunky side for a snake.

Is there a way to tell slugs that were due to not being fertilized vs calcium or nutrient deficiency. There are no lucent slugs, but bad slugs were mushy and gross/slimy...

:(

If I was pushed, I'd say it was more likely to be the male, as the female's a proven breeder. The only way to be sure is to put him with another proven female and see what results.

Unless the female has any hets, I don't think there's much point trying her with another male. If she produced fertile eggs, then you'd get all Normals and you wouldn't know whether they were from the first or second male.

yeah I kinda don't want to blow this year of breeding, I wanted to produce normals het anery het stripe. My only proven male is her original mate who is straight normal.

I have another unproven male normal stripe that was "humping" the crap out of my male miami (boy he didn't like that- I separated them), I might consider putting in there with her but again, I really wanted to produce het anery het stripe :(

she dropped another 16 today, for a totaly of 28 eggs so far. Of the 28, only about 3 are of almost appropriate size and have the "healthy-egg" white sheen to them. All others are slightly yellowed, small, super soft.

As I said none of the 28 have lucent patches or anything. At least not a calcium deficiency right?

Anyone have experience with telling a non-fertilized egg from a vit/mineral deficiecnt egg?

Is it possible the three eggs that look good could be fertilized from her previous mating a year or two ago? One of my local guys said females can hold onto sperm for a year sometimes?

She's a big female, I'm not surprised at all she dropped 28, wouldn't surprise me if she dropped a few more. Just wish they had been fertilized.

I have used small, "undersized" males a number of times when I really needed to get them in the genepool that year instead of waiting. This year, I used a young ultra caramel male that was small, but willing. He bred about 4 or 5 females, but most of the eggs were infertile. However, a few still look good.

Using such males in the past, I have sometimes found that even if most of their eggs were bad, there were often a few good ones too. And the following year, he usually did MUCH better in the fertility dept.

OTOH, I have found that many of those little bitty males did just fine and produced lots of good eggs their first year. So my guess is that the male was mostly shooting blanks, but that any fertile eggs are most likely his, and that he will most likely do much better next year.

Thanks for the reply Kathy, it's always an honor to get a response from you.

Think it's a waste to let him have a second go at her for a double-clutch (keeping her properly fed and vitamin-ized) or just try someone else?

Thanks again

You might try the other unproven stripe male. At least any babies would be het stripe. Unless you want "anery stripe or bust" - then try the other one again. Maybe let him breed her several times in hopes of catching a few good sperm.
