Should I get an under heater pad?

I don't know whether Prisa needs a heater pad. I have her in a 20 gallon terrarium upstairs with about 1" thick of aspen substrate with a lightbulb on top of the locking sliding screen on top. The light and tank were previously used for a lizard and a snake before that, but I don't know if they had a heater pad or not.

Under tank heating is the preferred way to heat snakes. Since corns are nocturnal, the majority of them are not going to make much use out of the basking spot. Under tank heaters also don't dry out the air, so you'll have less shedding problems. You'll also be less likely to have problems with your snake digesting. Just make sure that you have a thermostat.

So if I have an under tank heater, do I need a light during the night? or should I keep it on all the time?

You leave the undertank heater + thermostat on all the time. The thermostat will automatically keep the heat mat at the temperature which you set.

It needs to be around the mid-80s on the floor surface of the warm side - the heater will get much higher than that without the thermostat, so it's an important bit of kit.

Hello, I didn't want to start a new thread, can you recommend a good UTH for a 29 gallon glass enclosure? I was wanting to purchase one along with the hydrofarm thermostat? Any recommendations appreciated because the reviews on all the products seem so mixed.

speaking directly from personal experience, an appropriately sized ZooMed UTH and that hydrofarm thermostat should be fine. I think a medium size would be fine for 29gal depending on the dimensions of the tank.

the hydrofarm thermostat works very well, although it doesn't keep the temp constant. it will turn the UTH on as soon as the temp gets more than 2 degrees lower than the set temp and it will turn it off after it gets to the set temp. for example if you have the temp set at 85 degrees it will turn on at 82.8 degrees and will turn off at 85 degrees. however i have noticed that because it turns it on and off rather than maintaining a constant temp, the temp can get as high as 2 degrees above the set temp where the probe is. so that's just something to keep in mind when setting the temp on it.

and as alicat has said a light is not needed.

The mat needs to cover about one-third of the floor area, so be guided by the floor size of the tank when choosing.

Fluctuations of a few degrees with an on/off thermostat are to be expected and are fine. Corns aren't really that sensitive to temporary spikes and dips that shallow. It's when they have sustained high temps of 90+ that they can't get away from, when problems start to happen.
