Should we feed?

Our baby is getting ready to shed for the first time with us since we got him two weeks ago. He's been hiding, and his eyes have glazed over and turned a blue-ish color. He is scheduled to feed tonight...should we offer the pinkie, or wait till he sheds?

Also, we bought a basking light for one side of the tank and keep it on during the day, turning it off when we go to bed. When it's on, he sits under the light under his hollow log all day long. Never moves out from under it. That side stays about 80-82 degrees. Once we shut it off, he will come out and move around the tank. Is it too much? Too hot? We do not have any other source of heat in the tank (our house stays between 72-75 degrees year round). Should we leave it on all night?

Sorry if these are stupid questions. We did buy The Corn Snake Manual that has answered alot of our questions.

Thanks,
Nicole and Diablo

Most snakes won't eat when they go in to shed, there are a few exceptions. Mine is in shed right now I made a little hide for her and have not seen her for days. I think when they go in to shed they are just miserable. I didn't even offer her the pinkie that she was supposed to have.

Your viv seems fine with the temps you have running, believe or not Cornsnakes don't like it too hot at all.

If your snake is going in to shed just make sure the humdity is good for them around 50% area.

Seems what your doing everything is okay.

Well, my boy eats fine when he's blue, but I do usually offer him a much smaller meal than usual when I feed him at those times. I don't think it would hurt to try feeding your snake, though he may refuse.

As for the lamp dilemma, it might actually be the light he's hiding from, not the heat. Mine definitely prefers cruising the tank in the dark. I suppose he feels safer that way.

I'm not sure...guess it depends on the snake. It can't hurt to offer...the worse your snake could do is refuse it. The first time my corn went blue, shed eyecaps and I was hesitant to feed, so I waited a few days...still no shed...s/he had been on a weekly feeding schedule when I prurchased him/her. So finally I couldn't take it...I fed the snake...s/he gobbled it right up and fifteen minutes later proceeded to shed. I've realized that my snake seems indifferent as to eating when getting ready to shed...as long as s/he gets fed once a week, otherwise, s/he seems to have (excuse the pun) a "hissy" fit! LOL!
