SHREDDED PAPPER AS SUBSTRAIT???

Alex Dew

Corn and Bp Lover
Hey all

Im using 1 layer of paper towel and loads of shredded up news paper on top of that at the moment for sudstrait. But im thinking of using paper which has just come out of a paper shredded (so its long, thin strips). But my queston is: That type of shredded paper can be very sharp and would it cut my snakes if i used it for substrait??? (i woud still have 1 layer of paper towel under that)

Thanks

Alex

I doubt it would cut your snakes, but a bigger problem might be in the inks or other materials on this type of paper. Newspaper uses non-toxic ink so it is OK, but if you are using miscellaneous letters, papers, etc. then I'm not sure that you could be certain that there isn't anything toxic in the shredded paper.

I use shredded paper, and haven't seen any negative side-effects. They seem quite happy burrowing around in it and thus far I haven't heard any complaints from them. I have been using it now for about three months and I haven't seen any leisions or marks on my corns. I also use it with my hamsters and they practly eat it and they aren't growing any third eyes. :)

same here

I used it for a while and the snakes loved it, the only reason I'm back to just one unshredded layer is becuase paper is so absorbant I found myself replacing a lot more substrate than I should.

Just a thought though... The snakes were way less shy!;)

Well thanks guys ad girls.
I used it for about a week but it didn't look very nice, so i have changed to wood chips.

Thanks

Alex
