Shy, sleepy, or scared?

Hello there. I'm so glad I found this site!

I've had my snake Rosey for almost a year now and I don't know anyone else in Santa Barbara that owns snakes, so when I've had a question I've usually read up on snakes, or, for my really unusaul questions, I'd ask the folks at the pet store.

Rosey is an albino corn... but I think "she" might actually be a he. I can't get used to the gender pronoun switch and the name "Rosario" though.

Okay.... so here's my question: Rosey hides.... a lot.

I hardly ever catch her out. She likes to hide under the paper towels I use for substrate.

Is this normal? Is she out and about when I'm sleeping perhaps? I don't want to disturb her if she's sleeping - but I usually take her out once a week to feed her and change the tank.

I read somewhere that it's best to feed them outside of the tank so they don't associate their tank with food and go to bite you when they are hungry. I take out everything in the tank, uncover her, and gently lift her out when it's time to feed her.

Rosey's never bitten me, but she retreats under the towel as soon as I put her back in the tank.

Does this mean she's just shy? Or could it mean she's scared of people?

Snakes are crepuscular (they come out during dusk and dawn) so is probably out and about when you are sleeping. Snakes are 'shy' animals anyway but don't let that all stop you handling her/him! ;)

Welcome to the forum!!!

SUZ,

YOu sound like you have a very normal, healthy corn. The only thing that sounds odd is that you only take her out once a week. The more you handle her/him, the more they get used to it and wont be so flighty after you put her back.

Chances are that your corn is quite active at night. Kaite tends to be sleepy durying the day and I've caught her being very active at night quite a few times.

Is there any way you could get pics of it up? I'd love to see it!

Rosey's Pic

Heres a picture of Rosey.

I've tried to attach it to this response.

Hope this works.

Thanks for the great feedback!

Corn are very gentle animal, they also like to be handel too. It is wise to handel your snake every day to let it get use to you. As for normal, they like to hide away after ate and since you only hold her once a week during feeding, and after ate they will hide away so it is not really much fun for him and you. I normaly leave my corn alone and only handel him two days after the meal, to be sure that they alreay done the poop.
As your corn get use to you and the surrounding, it will come out more often. My baby corn always come out of it's hide in the evening when he heard me coming into the room because it knows that I am going to take him out again. So I also suggest that you handel him at a certain time everyday and they will get use to it and looking forward to be out and about.
Have a happy time with your corn

:p
