Skittish Snake

My corn snake will be a year old this August. She is such a good girl, a great eater, and I love her to death. It saddens me to see how jumpy she still is. I handle at least 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time. She is totally fine when she is in my hands. The problem is when I set her down. I like to let her walk across my bed or the carpet to explore. But if I let her do that for more than 5 minutes, she FREAKS OUT when I go to pick her up or touch her again. For instance, I had her on my bed the other day. She took a liking to a snake stuffed animal on my bed (haha) and spent time smelling it and "snuggling" it for about 15 minutes. When she finally moved on, I went to pick her up to hold her again. I made sure that she saw my hand coming so it didn't startle her. She saw my hand, but when I touched her, she literally jumped into the air and shot across my bed like a rocket. After I was holding her again, she was fine. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? I have read that most corns become more calm and indifferent to touching as they age, but I hate the feeling I get when she runs and I want to fix it. Any advice is very appreciated! :)

I would just continue handling her as you have been. Some of mine are like that as well. They are fine while being held, but if you set them down, they would prefer to escape. At one year old, it may take another year or two before she's completely calmed down.

I only have one snake that does not jump or move when I pick her up and that snake is Charisma, my sweetheart. Charisma just looks up at me when I take her out and is unbelievably calm. My husband calls her my bracelet. All the rest have varying degrees of flightiness of downright nastiness when I pick them up.

^^^^^^YES!!! This! All of mine are just like yours, love to be on their own but are skitty to pick up but fine in my hands except Boots, my lover boy. He is now over 900g and I am his girlfriend. He would be my bracelet but he is more like a belt. He loves being picked up and held, if I let him go he stays near me and explores me instead of anything else. I haven't been felt up like it since high school.

Oh, I need to get this knee surgery over with and get out of bed so I can walk again!!! I am going stir crazy, I am sure I sound like a lunatic by my posts!

Lol! Well it's good to know that I'm not the only one, and that eventually she'll grow out of some of it. I can't wait until she's bigger so she can't "sneak off" so easily. I love to let her explore, but she abuses her privileges. I need to weigh her again. She's about 26 inches last time I checked, and she's a wonderful eater. I love watching her grow :)

Keep a journal on her, I weigh all of mine before I feed them and check them over. I write in an old Composition book the date, weight, what they ate (or didn't), if they are blue, if they shed, and anything out of the ordinary. It is awesome to go back and compare and see the progression, and if you have pics it is even better!
