Hi, i am new here and new to snakes. i am 14 years old and have wanted a snake for a few years. my parents finally let me get a snake so i will be getting a snake in about half a week. My dad and I built a cage(40 inches high,34 inches long and 24 deep)(the equvalent of 120 us gallons)and i read somewhere they should not be kept in any cages larger than 30 us gallons.

that leads me to my first question:

1. will that overwhem the corn snake?

2. It has a lamp heater, no under tank, will this be ok? the tank is on wheels so i cannot put an under tank on, i don't think.

3. Will a corn snake do ok on it's own? i would only have 1 untill the summer.

HELP Me

hi...good questions...

as long as you have a lot of hiding places for your snake he should be fine in a large enclosure. without enough hides your snake may become stressed and that would not be a good thing at all. i would recommend that you get a UTH to use a secondary heat source. snakes do best when they are alone in an enclosure. it is not recommended that you put more than one snake in one vivarium...they can become cannabilistic, if one gets sick they are all more likely to get sick, you can't easily determine which one went to the bathroom or which one ate. good luck and feel free to ask more questions.

ok, how would i go about attaching the uth to the bottom of the tank? it is about 4 inches offf the ground. also, i only have about a $65 budget, will i beable to get a uth for a bit less than that? :shrugs:

UTH's are expensive, for any size. When you start getting way up there in size, it becomes more expensive.

The biggest question here is what's the bottom of the tank? Wood, glass, plexiglass?

You'd probably want to put the UTH in the middle of the tank so your corn doesn't have to go miles for heat.

yea...i'm not sure...

what your setup is like so i don't know what to recommend in terms of secondary heat. UTH's are expensive. it's something that you could consider getting in the future if it's out of your price range for the moment. an alternative...provide day glo and night glo heat for your snake.

ok, here is my deal, my dad is a huge money saver, right now, all we have in there is a birch hida-a-log and he doesn't want to get a night glow light "because it's just a name, they'll be fisn w/o one". i just looked at uth's on petco and they are in my price range for the biggest one.

It's floor space that you need and since your tank is higher than it is wide, it's going to make for a really pretty viv if you add lots of climbing branches (do a search in how to prep the wood).

So to answer your questions...

1. No. The floor space of my 25 gallon tank is 13"x30". Your tank is not too large, but make sure you provide lots of hides. Corns love paper towel rolls so throw in a couple of those also.

2. This depends on the temps in your home. So long as the warm side remains at 80-85, and the cool side around 70-75 (do not let it drop below 68) you can use either or. I use both because my apartment is generally cold, but think of it this way. A heated floor does very little when the air temps are very low.

3. Not a good idea to house 2 corns together. Do some searches and you'll quickly see why.

Good luck. :)

Actually, the uth's aren't that expensive. I think I paid $12 for a 10 gl. tank sized one. They stick with adhesive to the bottom of the tanks, so attaching it is not a problem. A temperature regulater may cost you more. I've never needed one as the temps thru the bottom of the viv have been fine.
