Smaller or Larger Pinks?

I want to buy in bulk from the mouse factory. My snake is in between sizes. Should I get a larger size pink and cut them up until he's big enough to eat them whole, or should I get smaller ones and feed two at a time?

And second, If anybody has anything to say about the mouse factory, then please post it.
 
i was in the same position and i went and bought the smaller ones and now im wishing i had went big, she grew alot faster then i was planning, but owell i guess it doesnt really matter if 2 small equall the same amout as one big....i go to rodentpro but ive heard nothing but good things about the mouse factory except there mice are bigger then usual

I've also heard nothing but good with TMF, so I'm going to do that. And plus, they have smaller package quantities, so I dont have extra, considering I have only one corn.
 
The Mouse Factory is great.

I suggest going with bigger ones and cutting them until your snake can handle them. You can go small and feed two at a time later, but that will cost you more in the long run.
 
I can't imagine it really being economical to buy bulk frozen for one hatchling, but I haven't done the math. Do you have a nearby retailer of f/t? One bag of large pinks and one bag of fuzzies would last a single hatchling a long time, but I'd think the shipping costs for such a small order would be prohibitive. :shrugs:
 
Here's the math:
Local Store Price: $0.85 each
Online price:
50 Lrg. Pinks X $0.25= $12.50
Approx. Shipping= $25.00
Total= $37.50

$37.50/50= $00.75 per mouse
$0.75 each
If you think about it in the long run, you're saving $0.10 each, and If I buy 50 I save $5.00 total, not that much, but that money can go towards part of another order, or a bag of substrate or cage furniture.
 
Shipping costs twice as much as the order itself, but once it's compared to my local store I still save. For 50 bad mice at my local store I would pay $42. Not to mention that the last time I bought from this local place I got pinks in the range of newborn to 6 days old. I had to throw out some of the smallest ones because they were so small they would be impossible for the snake to swallow.
 
Well they come vacuum sealed and last for a loooong time, so why not get a bag of pinkies and fuzzies? You could probably even throw in a bag of hoppers and they'd last. Makes no real sense to not add those into your order because it's not really going to increase the shipping costs...

I dont want to do that because at the moment I dont have the space. Even with the vacuum seal I wouldn't trust them for more than a year.
50 large pinks=equals one pink once a weak for about a year. That's exactly how long I trust them. I may do that once I get into the 25 pack quantity size.

It definitely is for me, more economical to buy bulk frozen from a place like the Mouse Factory as opposed to buying locally. Even with the shipping costs added in I am still paying less than $1 per mouse and after calling all the places I know of locally (even going thru the phone book), the places around here all want AT LEAST $1 per mouse, even small pinkies. Petsmart wants something like $1.42 per mouse!!! If I'm remembering correctly. The cheapest place I found wanted $1.

Your snake will never grow much eating one pink a week for a year. In fact, it could starve. By the time a snake's a year old, it should probably be at LEAST on hoppers, if not on weaned mice (small adults). By a year, the snake should have graduated from pinks to large pinks to fuzzies to hoppers. You can cheat and use two fuzzies instead of hoppers at that stage. If I were you, I'd buy them locally until your snake is on fuzzies. Then I'd order a couple of bags of them, and maybe a tray of weaneds.

And I don't understand this statement:

Why would a small pink be impossible for a snake to swallow? I don't get why you threw away good pinks. You could have used two if they were too small for a meal by themselves. :shrugs:
 
You have no clue how small they were. I might as well have fed my snake flies. The reason why he couldnt swallow it was that they were so small, he would bite at one, but it would immediatley come out of his grasp. It stunk too, because those little pinkies cost me $0.85 each.

I just think if I feed him twice a week he'll be so busy digesting that I wont have time to handle him.

Forgive me for saying so, but this is crazy talk! :grin01: I DO have a clue how small they were. I've seen minutes-old mice plenty of times. There's no way your little wormling couldn't grasp and swallow one. Believe me on this one.

I never said to feed him a large prey item, and I never said to feed him twice a week. You can feed him an appropriately sized prey item (between 1 and 1.5 times the snake's girth at its widest point) once per week. But a pinky will not be an appropriately sized prey item for long, and certainly not for a year. That was my point.
 
Hmmmm... He's just started eating medium size pinkies once a week, when will he be ready to move up to fuzzies?
 
imho....go buy yourself a scale and follow the munson plan it works great and theres really no need for questions its all self explanitory best system to follow i have seen or read so far....

When a fuzzy is 1 - 1.5 times the girth of your snake at its widest point, he'll be ready for them.

In that other thread where you explained that your brother was using your account, you said that he was a cornsnake owner too. How is that factoring into your plans for purchasing mice? What kind of corn does he have, and how big is it?

His snake is in his appartment out in NY. He has a blizzard, which may be the reason I want to get one *jealous rage is boiling up*... I dont know how big it is, as I avent been up to new york in a long while.

Mr.Munson, how well does this munson plan work?

And this question is solved. ATM I'm going to buy locally, and then once he gets to full size then I'll buy online.
 
Owwwww. I have a headache just from reading this thread.

Patm1313 my advice to you is listen to everything Roy (Dean) tells you. He has given you perfect advice in this and other threads.

And since he can't answer, I will say, yes, yes the "Munson Plan" works perfectly.
