In a period where reptile owners are under attack by anti-exotic pet movements we all need to be hyper-vigilent about proper caging and treatment of our animals. I understand you have multiple clips on your tanks however if you are unsuccessful or uncertain about the integrity of the enclosure you should not keep the animal in there unless you are watching him/her. I recommend you go to your nearest walmart and purchase one of those glad, dual-locking lid containers, drill some small holes in it and keep your animal in there until you can work the kinks out of your enclosure.
The animal was not "trying" to escape per se. Merely looking for the most comfortable place to hide. I'm not saying providing better houses/hids in the tank will 100% prevent future escapes it might help calm the snake and allow him/her to feel more comfortable. Kitchen can be loud, cold, scary to a snake and it's no surprise he/she takes a defensive (not offensive) stance toward you...
proper enclosures, adequate hides, appropriate handling together will solve your problem...
