Anyone know any sites I could find information about catching snakes in the wild? I wanna go out in tha field an try some stuff but would like to learn more before I do it. To many chances of ven's getting ahold of me with the little knowledge I have.

goodluck.. ive searched every search engine with every possibility.. i can't find anything.. im tryin to get an experienced herper from redtailboa.net to write up an article on catching wild herps.. if i get 1 ill let u know

Im not sure about a site... but I know that for kansas at least you have to have a hunting lic. to catch reptiles in the fields(or course that doesnt mean you really need to have one:D never been caught yet) but there is a book that shows all the dif. kind of species of reptiles in the USA im not sure of the name of the book but you can go to the Walden books store and in the wildlife section there will be a book that is a soft cover and its green, and itll be the book that you really really want... that book is the book that started me on reps! And ive loved them ever since

Do a search for non game hunting licenses in your area. If you meet up with the wrong officer w/o one you could have some hefty fines to pay. Also there are several species in different states not aloud to be caught.

The "little green book" is produced by the National Autobon Society

Also look into some books by DK. I hope that helps. I dont have the titles on me atm but if you need them i can get them to ya.

But all ya have to do is go to a book store in your area and ask a clerk.

Also Join your local herp society and someone there should beable to help you find great places to hunt. Please read the link written by Rich Z. It has some VERY good points!

GoodLuck

thanks a lot for that info.. i tried findin out about a local herp society but none exist in my area, kinda sucks for me.. n about tha laws.. i own LOTS of property out of city limits in undeveloped areas basically in the middle of nowhere.. if a cop really wants 2 bother me that bad he better be chargin me with somethin way better than catchin some snakes, ha

field collecting

Its a blast. Really, no bigger thrill than grabbing onto a live wild snake.
There are tons of stories, articles, and ongoing trips being discussed.
Like the man said, try kingsnake.com's field collecting forums, get yourself a local snake guide with good descriptions, and LEARN IT, then get onto herpchat or a similar chatsite that allows only appropriate talk for some instant info.
Some of those guys know a lot.
There are certain times of day, seasons, weather patterns, etc. that are best. Get to know the places and habitats you'll be hunting. All of it is fairly important to find what you're after. One of the most crucial things, believe it or not, is to knoe what you're after, so you can go to the proper type of habitat.
Luck to you.
