I have 3 friends that I have known for years and they are terrified of snakes.
But they love me no matter what.
My BFF's mother is absolutely terrified to the point of insanity. She will lock herself in the car if she sees a GARTER in the bushes.
But the other day she told me that she saw a Red Rat snake (Which is actually a Corn snake) outside. She tells me,
"I kept a distance from it, but I didn't scream or run or lock myself up in the car. I watched it and it was kind of interesting, and I do admit it was fairly pretty"
She's even offered to touch it if I went and got stitches after I gashed open my leg (I was terrified and lost my dignity that day) but I was so dead set on not getting them, I refused. The deal was off about 5 seconds later, which sucks cause I got them anyway
My friend (who I sort of despise) is terrified of snakes. It's because her father is over-protective. She's also afraid of spiders, large dogs (except my beasts, whom she loves!), isn't allowed to swim in the deep end of the pool (wtf?!?!) and her sisters aren't allowed to eat hard tacos...it's really quite crazy.
She was afraid to COME IN MY ROOM, but now she's considering "touching" Muscles or Zeus.
My BFF is, not suprisingly, not a big fan of snakes either, because of her mom. But she eventually came through and made friends with Muscles
I want to educate people about snakes, because it seems they are too thought down on. Too many are killed out of ignorance and fear. I can understand not wanting venomous snakes around, but a harmless garter snake is just irrational.
My dad is petrified of us going near a wood pile in our yard because its a "rattlesnake heaven". He warns us everyday, acting like I'm 8 or something.
I hate it when I tell someone about my snakes, and they say, "Ewww!"
It bugs the crap out of me. And they refuse to let me show them that snakes aren't gross or mean.
Many people are afraid because of:
Media
The Bible (which, I am atheist, but, if I weren't, I would say, "God created snakes, Satan just chose to take on their form. Snakes themselves aren't bad.")
Old wive's tales
Being taught that way
Bad experiences
I wish to put an end to this, "Snakes are bad, snakes are evil" thingy in movies and books. Even JK Rowling portreyed snakes as the enemy! God....
