Snake Holiday Boarding

Hydroxy

New member
Hi, I just got my first Corn Snake, he is about 1 month old.

I am going away over Christmas and wanted someone to look after him.
But I have been told that I can turn down the heatsource and let him "hibernate" whilst away, in a temp of about 50-60 degrees.
According to the person who told me this, the snake will be fine to go without food and attention for up to 3 months like this.
I am only going away for 3 weeks.

Is it worth me hunting around for a Holiday board, or can I just let him hibernate?
if I should find a boarding place, does anyone know of one in the West Midlands, UK?

Thanks,

Hyd

Snakes don't hibernate, they brumate. I don't know the difference. But I do know that if you brumate the snake there are procedures to follow and it should be for the whole winter. You can't just turn the snake off like a lightswitch*

Your snake is probably too young to brumate anyway. Your best bet is to leave the temperatures normal and have someone stop by and feed it at least once. And change the water at least weekly.

OK, you could turn down the temp and leave the snake for 3 weeks and the snake will probably be fine. But instead of brumating, the snake is just going to search around looking for warmth. Warmth that its immune system depends on to help it fend off diseases like respiratory infections. It's not in the best interest of the snake.

He should be fine w/o eating for three weeks - it's not ideal, but he'll be ok. But I would find someone to make sure he has fresh clean water though. If you can find someone who you trust to feed him then go that route, but if not at least find someone who will ensure he has fresh clean water. And I would just leave the heat on.

Hi hyd, I think your new baby is too young to brumate.
As you can see I'm in the UK as well and when I came across this issue back when we first started keeping reptiles, we found out that our local reptile pet shop offered boarding services, so perhaps you could ask there (at your local shop) when you next go to buy food and if they don't, then maybe they will know of a reputable place that does. That is if you can't find someone to come in and look after him for you.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
